Lorde – Royals

It's hard to believe that this young lady is only 16 years old, but that seems to be the truth. And she's right that we will never be royals. Now, If only I can avoid this tune on top 40 radio for the next 6 months.

  1. I was thinking 17... She's young, but she's been signed and working with producers for years apparently. That makes me less impressed. Of course, I couldn't do any of that writing/singing/etc., so I should just be quiet and enjoy the music.

I do love this song. And The Current has been playing another of hers lately - "The Love Club" or something like that. I've been enjoying that one quite a bit (First listen was: meh. After that it was much liked.).

  2. I edited this to httpv:
It would seem that whatever fix allows videos in FF only worked with that prefix, not the http: one.

      1. It looked like just the http: URL worked too.
I don't think it needs fixing, just people (and flesh-based protein-rich foodstuffs) doing things the right way.

    1. I think one of the reasons it hasn't yet hit that saturation point for me is because the song does different things but doesn't overdo any of them. The whole "tigers on a gold leash" thing only happens what, twice in the song? It's quick, it's interesting, and it's gone. That'll keep me coming back longer than a lot of songs.

      1. All that and I don't listen to radio.
You know what song is hitting my saturation point? "Flaws" by Bastille because my wife and kids love it and play it to death.

  3. She also does an interesting cover of the Replacements "Swingin' Party".

While it can't touch the original, it proves that she (or her management team) has some taste.

  4. hmm, this one didn't work for me so much. the song was okay (first i've heard of it/her), but the performance bugged me. if your live performance is 70% pre-recorded, what's the point of even bringing in two guys that are basically just pushing buttons? just sing the whole thing over a pre-recorded mix (or even just lip-sync) and be done with it.

Is that really how you feel, or are you just trying to find a reason why you don't dig this as much as others do?
I think the original (listen here before you get sick of it) is very good, and while I don't feel that this performance is fantastic, she can definitely sing as well as on the album (so no reason to lip-synch).

As for the guys, one has a drum machine, so he's playing the buttons live. He has real drums, too.
The other guy is triggering samples (including background vox) or effects as they're needed.
You could do all that with a tape, but you miss a bar and the whole thing's messed up.
And they might perform more than one song, where it might make more sense. [Yep.]

Do the dudes need to be shown so much? No, but this is a performance for a radio station that they filmed for the internet: who knows how or why they're choosing the shots they are. Maybe it's to show that there's no real backup singers.

There are plenty of artists I'd be excited to see live performances from where all they do is "push buttons".

no, i think the song is fine, and i definitely like her voice. my reservations were purely with the presentation.

without comparing it to the original yet (are the backing vocals basically the same?), i guess my point was more why go through all the trouble of making it as close to the album experience as possible when you could just do a real, live performance that fits within it's own microcosm? make something new. make something imperfect. if you can't properly replicate your album version due to heavy production/lack of personnel/whathaveyou, then strip it down to work with what you do have.

i'm not trying to take anything away from their talent (any of the players in this song), i just didn't see a lot of value in their decision to present this song as they did.

also, if you want to drop your hard earned to see skrillex* play with his laptop, then god bless ya!

*heh, i know very well that's definitely not what you were referring to

        1. She's Nuzealish and a new artist hitting radio stations for promotional performances and across the US with just an EP to her name.
Maybe those new interpretations will come, but given she's still working on an album, I'm willing to give her some slack.
Is it too much too soon? Well, strike when the iron's hot or you could be the next Cloud Room or something.
People reacted well to the songs that were available so maybe it's time to do a suitcase tour of big-city radio stations.

I think the background vox in the performance are likely the same pieces from the studio version. (Her own voice? I don't know.)

When Zola Jesus toured on Stridulum, she and her band had only seven songs they knew how to play together. She said, "I'd like to play more but this is all we have." I did wish there was more.
(The six songs on the EP plus the re-version of "Sea Talk" that made the European release Stridulum II and a few months later, the US Valusia EP.)
