The second of the winter leagues begins today: the Mexican League.
There are eight teams in the Mexican League. Each team plays seventy games, playing each of the other teams ten times. Last year, six of the eight made the playoffs. They matched up in best-of-seven series, with the three winners plus one of the losers advancing to the second round. Those teams are again matched up in best-of-seven series, with the winners playing in a best-of-seven championship series.
There are currently no Twins listed on Mexican League rosters. Why follow it, then? Well, for one thing, as I said yesterday, I'm not sure how reliable or meaningful rosters are in winter leagues. For another thing, things can change. It could be that a Twin or two will take part in the league at some point in the future, or that the Twins will sign someone who's playing there. But most importantly, it's baseball. That's really all the reason we need.
