Mexican Matchups: Games of 10/16

A big day for Zelous Wheeler.  A pitchers' duel in Hermosillo.  They emptied the bullpens in extra innings in Najojoa.

GUASAVE 12, MAZATLAN 0 IN GUASAVE

Mazatlan:  Henry Mateo was 2-for-4.

Guasave:  Jose Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Zelous Wheeler (Baltimore) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run, his third, scoring three times and driving in three.  Juan Delgadillo pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Guasave scored four in the third to go ahead 5-0 and four in the sixth to go ahead 10-0.

HERMOSILLO 2, LOS MOCHIS 1 IN HERMOSILLO

Los Mochis:  Jamie Johnson (Detroit) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Thomas Melgarejo pitched six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Hermosillo:  Jose Amador was 2-for-3.  Juan Oramas (San Diego) struck out eight in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.

The game:  Hermosillo scored single runs in the third and fourth.  It stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when Los Mochis got its lone score.  Los Mochis had the tying run on second with one out in the eighth.

CULIACAN 8, NAVOJOA 6 IN NAVOJOA (13 INNINGS)

Culiacan:  Maxwell Leon was 3-for-4 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Matt Angle (Dodgers) was 3-for-6 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Emmanuel Valdez was 2-for-6 with a walk and two home runs, driving in three.

Navojoa:  Wes Bankston was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Luis Fonseca was 2-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Kraig Binick was 2-for-6.

The game:  Navojoa led 4-2 after one, 5-3 after three, and 6-4 after six.  Culiacan tied it in the eighth on a two-run double by Leon.  Valdez hit a two-run homer in the thirteenth to win it.
