Chuck Klosterman wrote more eloquently than I ever could about the man. I'll just play a few clips, instead. You were a legend, Lou.

I linked to this in the comments yesterday, but since this joint appears to be a ghost town, no one will notice. (The look Lou gives Antony at the end of this performance is just perfect.)

Velvet Underground forever.

Sorry, was this post late?!?
No. Sorry for the ghost town feeling, but my internets are on the fritz.
I was just messin'.
(Say, I'll pinch hit for a few days this week if you and jobu want a breather. I'm taking the week off to get ready for an open house at my studio, so I have some free time. And a folder filled to bursting.)
I think it is time for an E6 Lou Reed playlist for the youngsters.
Steve Hyden and the Grantland staff have a pretty nice list up:
The Essential and Underrated Lou Reed: 14 Songs You Need to Hear. There are definitely some holes to fill, but that's a pretty good starter kit.
"The Velvet Underground was like the Beatles for people who couldn’t get dates"
I'm totally down with a bootsy fill in. Actually, I'm more than totally down with that plan.
Is said open house open to the public? Got scooped on the one piece but I'd like to see if there are others that click.
Art Attack is this weekend.
Yes it is. I'm in Studio 377.
6 - do you know St. P. artist C. Stack?
I do not. I'm familiar with an L. Stack who used to be St Paul based.
heh, says the man that turned down the offer previously?
anyway, have at it*.
*(disclaimer to the standard guest DJ policy: old DJs are welcome to pick up a week now and then. they've earned it. this offer is rendered null and void to anything related to william shatner)
Everything changes. Plus, I've been craving people's indifference.
i know, it's like a drug, right?
Thanks for sharing bootsy.
Another solid obit.
I read that one, too.
There's been a lot of good writing about the man. His importance to rock and roll culture cannot be understated.
Wish I could claim I was early to the party, but I didn't pick up VU & Nico until about 4 years ago. Even still, I've certainly come around.
I didn't know about the VU until college, myself--well over a decade from their so-called heyday. It took a huge re-issue of their catalog (in every indie record shop I frequented) to alert me to Mr. Reed's earlier combo. 1983, maybe?

Yep, it was 1983. That's when VU came out which was touted as a "lost" album and all the rest of their albums were re-released. That's when I got into the band as well. I agree with Klosterman that Velvet Underground and Nico (released in 1966) sounds like it could have been released yesterday.
The first time I heard VU was The Doors movie.
angelic voice on Antony, but boy does he look like a bobblehead in this video.
also, Pale Blue Eyes may be my favorite VU song. that's a pretty song.
I've spent the last few days wishing I had my turntable and vinyl of "VU & Nico" here with me. I used to love coming home from work and putting that on and just chillin for an hour or so.
I don't know of any Lou Reed/VU I've listened to except on the radio or TV or things like that.
I read an obit on my commute.
I'm listening to Metal Machine Music right now (via youtube). This is pretty good, but I'm not sure about another hour of it.
