LARA 5, ARAGUA 3 IN LARA
Twins: Josmil Pinto (Aragua) was 1-for-3. Oswaldo Arcia (Aragua) was used as a pinch-hitter and was 0-for-1. Aaron Thompson (Aragua) retired both men he faced, striking out one of them.
Aragua: Luis Maza was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Gumercindo Gonzalez pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout.
Lara: Oswaldo Navarro was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Luis Valbuena was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Hernan Iribarren was 2-for-3.
The game: RBI singles by a pair of ex-Twins, Maza and Yangervis Solarte, put Aragua ahead 2-1 in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, and error led to a pair of Lara runs to put Lara back on top 3-2. Jose Yepez hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 5-2. Aragua got one back in the fifth but could not get another runner past first base.
ZULIA 2, CARACAS 1 IN ZULIA (10 INNINGS)
Caracas: Jesus Galindo (San Francisco) was 2-for-3 with a run. Danny Dorn was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Victor Garate struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and one walk.
Zulia: Marwin Gonzalez (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a walk. Jose Pirela (Yankees) was 2-for-4. Cesar Valdez struck out six in six shutout innings, allowing five hits and one walk.
The game: Ernesto Mejia (Atlanta) hit a solo homer in the fourth to put Zulia ahead 1-0. The score was unchanged until the eighth, when a Dorn RBI single tied the score at one. In the tenth, Luis Ugueto led off with a pinch-hit double, which was followed by two bunts that brought home the winning run.
LA GUAIRA 7, MAGALLANES 5 IN LA GUAIRA
Magallanes: Argenis Diaz was 3-for-4 with a run. Mario Lisson was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his seventh. Adonis Garcia (Yankees) was 2-for-5 with a double and a run.
La Guaira: Carlos Sanchez (White Sox) was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Luis Sardinas (Texas) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. C. J. Retherford was 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run homer (his seventh), scoring twice.
The game: Lisson hit a two-run homer in the first to give Magallanes a 2-0 lead. La Guaira scored tied it with single runs in the first and second, the latter on a Javier Herrera home run. Retherford hit a three-run homer in the third to put La Guaira up 5-2 and they got two more in the fifth to make it 7-2. A pair of errors led to a three-run sixth for Magallanes to get them back into the game. Magallanes never got more than one man on base after that.
