A pair of solo homers lift Santurce.  Errors, walks, and a hit batsman provide Carolina with a win.

SANTURCE 5, PONCE 4 IN PONCE

Santurce:  Jonathan Singleton (Houston) was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and two runs.  Edwin Maysonet was 2-for-4.  Jorge Martinez struck out seven in five innings, giving up two unearned run on four hits and two walks.

Ponce:  Geraldo Valentin was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Yovan Gonzalez (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4.

The game:  Jonathan Rodriguez (St. Louis) hit a two-run double in the second and later came around to score, putting Santurce ahead 3-1.  Ponce got one back in the fourth on a wild pitch and took the lead back 4-3 with a two-run sixth.  Jack Lopez (Kansas City) homered to lead off the seventh, tying the score at four, and Singleton homered with one out in the eighth to put Santurce in front 5-4.  Ponce managed to get the tying run on base with two out in the ninth.

CAROLINA 6, CAGUAS 4 IN CAGUAS

Carolina:  Carlos Moncrief (Cleveland) was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Robinson Cancel was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Orlando Alfonso pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Caguas:  Juan Silva (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once.  Janluis Castro (Texas) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Luis Atilano struck out three in three shutout innings of relief, allowing three hits and one walk.

The game:  Carolina scored two in the first, but Caguas got single runs in the first and second to tie the score.  An RBI single by Castro put Caguas ahead 3-2 in the seventh, and a Jamie Ortiz RBI double made it 4-2 in the eighth.  In the ninth, though, scored four times.  Two walks and an error produced the first run, a hit batsman loaded the bases, another error tied the score, and RBI singles by Osvaldo Martinez (Dodgers) and Enrique Hernandez (Houston) put Carolina ahead 6-4.  Caguas got the tying run on base with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
