November 17, 2013: Memory Idiosyncrasies

Today is the birthday of the first girlfriend I ever had. I remember this more readily than I remember her name, which trips me up for a minute sometimes, which is odd because there are five letters total between her first and last names, and they rhyme.

      1. I was gonna say Roseanne Roseannadanna, but she has seven letters (you didn't say they couldn't be repeated, right?)

  1. So, I'm going to a reception with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tonight. I may or may not get to actually interact with him. Any questions I should ask (that don't involve Airplane! reference)?

      1. I considered the Bruce Lee angle. In the end, I just shook his hand and introduced him to a 6th grade teacher I had met at the event (a "VIP" reception to kick off a STEM conference).

        1. "...introduced him to a 6th grade teacher..."

As in, "Mr. Abdul-Jabbar, this is Ms. Smith. Ms. Smith, this is Mr. Abdul-Jabbar. I think you two will find you've got a lot in common. Well, I'm off to the buffet!"?

          1. Pretty much. 🙂

I dragged the guy over, shook kareem's hand and said I would like him to meet so-and-so, then got out of the way. It was fun.

      1. She was, actually. I traded up many times in high school and college (confidence works, dudes), but that was a major trade-up, because at the time I had those ridiculously oversized glasses and a healthy helping of acne. She was short, curvy and two(?) years my senior. She got a lot of attention from the guys that summer (it was a program for HS kids at MSU, Mankato) and for whatever reason, I stood out to her. I broke up with her in September because I couldn't handle "long distance" at the time. I found out later that when she called and I ended up breaking up with her, she was calling to invite me over for her birthday. Ugh.
