Australian Audit: Games of 11/30

Twins pitchers struggled.  Logan Wade had a good day.  Interestingly, Australian League doubleheaders have one game of seven innings and one of nine innings.

MELBOURNE 2, CANBERRA 0 IN MELBOURNE (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Canberra:  The team had only two hits, both singles.

Melbourne:  Brad Harman was 1-for-1 with two walks and a run.  Justin Trapp (Kansas City) was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  John Hussey (San Diego) pitched six innings, allowing two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Both runs scored in the fifth on a one-out single by Ryan Casteel (Oakland).  Canberra's best scoring chance came in the first inning when a single and two errors put runners on first and third with one out, but a double play ended the threat.

CANBERRA 5, MELBOURNE 1 IN MELBOURNE (GAME 2)

Twins:  Lewis Thorpe (Melbourne) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Canberra:  Jon Berti (Toronto) was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Shane Opitz (Toronto) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, driving in four.  Jeff Lyman pitched seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Melbourne:  Jared Schlehuber (Kansas City) was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Ryan Casteel (Oakland) was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Toshihiro Iwao pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Opitz hit a bases-clearing double in the second to cap a four-run inning and give Canberra a 4-0 lead.  Melbourne never got any closer.

PERTH 6, SYDNEY 0 IN SYDNEY (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Twins:  Josh Guyer (Sydney) pitched four innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Perth:  Luke Hughes was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jesse Barron was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Mike Ekstrom pitched a complete game, striking out eight and giving up three hits and one walk.

Sydney:  Joshua Dean was 2-for-3.  Joey DeMichele was 1-for-3 with a double.  Todd Grattan pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks.

The game:  An RBI single by Hughes opened the scoring in the third inning.  Perth added two in the fourth and three in the fifth, with Barron driving in two on a double.  Sydney only twice got a man to second base.

PERTH 4, SYDNEY 3 IN SYDNEY (GAME 2)

Perth:  Tucker Nathans was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  George Barber was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Brandon Tripp was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Sydney:  Joey DeMichele (White Sox) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Michael Lysaught was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.

The game:  Sydney scored two in the first, and each team scored in the third.  An RBI single by Nathans cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth.  In the seventh, Tripp hit a two-run double to put Perth ahead.  Sydney did not get a hit after the fifth inning.

ADELAIDE 8, BRISBANE 4 IN ADELAIDE

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 2-for-4 with a run.

Brisbane:  David Sutherland was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Joey Rickard (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-4 with a walk and two doubles, driving in two.  Marcus Bradley was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double, scoring once.

Adelaide:  James Baldwin (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and four RBIs.  Joe Sclafani (Houston) was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Brock Hebert (Seattle) was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.

The game:  Brisbane built a 3-1 lead after three, but in the fourth Baldwin hit a two-run homer to tie the score.  It stayed tied until the seventh, when a ground out put Brisbane ahead 4-3.  The lead didn't last long, because in the bottom of the seventh a Ben Lodge single tied the score and a bases-loaded hit batsman gave Adelaide a 5-4 lead.  Baldwin followed with a two-run single and an error plated another run, making the score 8-4.  Brisbane did not get the tying run up to bat after that.
