Puerto Rican League: Games of 12/4

Another good outing for Jon Velasquez.  Ex-Twin Aaron Bates leads Caguas to victory.

SANTURCE 9, MAYAGUEZ 2 IN MAYAGUEZ

Twins:  Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4.  Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 1-for-4.  Jon Velasquez (Santurce) struck out two in two perfect innings.

Santurce:  Jonathan Singleton (Houston) was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run (his seventh), scoring twice and driving in three.  John Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Victor Mateo (Tampa Bay) struck out eight in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.

Mayaguez:  Randy Ruiz was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Irving Falu (Milwaukee) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his second.

The game:  Santurce scored five in the first and was in control all the way.  Singleton hit a two-run homer in the inning and Angel Morales had a two-run single.  Mayaguez pulled to within 5-2 after six, but Santurce scored two in the seventh and two in the ninth to put it away.

CAGUAS 3, PONCE 0 IN PONCE

Caguas:  Edgardo Baez was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Aaron Bates was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Efrain Nieves (Toronto) struck out six in six innings, giving up five hits and one walk.

Ponce:  Ivan DeJesus was 2-for-4.  Logan Williamson pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Bates hit a two-run single in the third to break a scoreless tie.  It remained 2-0 until the ninth, when Roberto Pena singled in an insurance run.  Ponce did not get a man past second base.
