Mexican Matchups: Games of 12/8

A comeback succeeds in Mexicali.  A comeback fails in Obregon.  No comebacks in the other games.

MEXICALI 3, CULIACAN 2 IN MEXICALI (10 INNINGS)

Culiacan:  Jorge Cantu was 2-for-5 with a double.  Adan Amezcua was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Daniel Rodriguez (Atlanta) pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

Mexicali:  Brad Snyder was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Xorge Carrillo (Mets) was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Javier Solano pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The game:  A sacrifice fly put Mexicali on the board in the first inning.  In the fifth, Culiacan tied it on a run-scoring infield out and took a 2-1 lead on a Felix Perez single.  The held the lead until the ninth, when Snyder hit a one-out homer.  In the tenth, Oscar Robles led off with a single, went to second on a hit batsman, took third on a bunt and, following an intentional walk, scored on a two-out Carrillo single.

NAVOJOA 5, OBREGON 4 IN OBREGON

Navojoa:  Rolando Acosta was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Jon Weber was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Hector Velazquez struck out seven in 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk.

Obregon:  Carlos Valencia was 2-for-4 with a home run, his ninth.  Dan Robertson (San Diego) was 2-for-5 with a run.  Bobby Cramer pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  John Lindsey hit a two-run homer in the first for Navojoa.  Obregon got one back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly and tied it up in the fifth on Valencia's homer.  Navojoa got an RBI single from Carlos Orrantia in the seventh and another from him in the ninth to go ahead 4-2.  In the bottom of the ninth, Iker Franco hit a pinch-hit two-out two-run double to tie the score.  In the tenth, Alejandro Gonzalez singled, went to second on a bunt, and scored on an RBI single by Weber to put Navojoa ahead.  Obregon got a man to first in the bottom of the tenth, but he was immediately erased on a double play to end the game.

HERMOSILLO 6, MAZATLAN 1 IN MAZATLAN

Hermosillo:  Luis Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Heber Gomez was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer (his third) and two runs.  Bryan Evans pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Mazatlan:  Issmael Salas was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jeremy Acey was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Mauricio Lara struck out five in five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.

The game:  An error and an RBI single by Garcia gave Hermosillo a 2-0 lead in the first.  Luis Borges produced an RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-0.  Mazatlan got on the board in the eighth on an RBI double by Acey and had runners on second and third with two out, but any thoughts of a comeback were quashed in the ninth when Gomez hit a three-run homer.

LOS MOCHIS 9, GUASAVE 1 IN LOS MOCHIS

Guasave:  Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Gabriel Gutierrez was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Los Mochis:  Emmanuel Avila was 1-for-3 with a walk and a grand slam (his sixth homer), scoring twice.  Rodolfo Amador was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Francisco Cordova pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Amador hit a two-run homer in the second to give Los Mochis a 2-0 lead.  An RBI groundout cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, but Los Mochis scored five in the fifth to put it out of reach.  Sergio Perez had an RBI double and Avila hit a grand slam in the inning.
