Kennys Vargas leads Mayaguez to victory. A double play scored the only run in Santurce.
MAYAGUEZ 4, CAGUAS 3 IN MAYAGUEZ
Twins: Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was o-for-3 with a walk. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.
Caguas: Miguel Abreu was 1-for-2 with a walk and a two-run homer, his third. Andy Gonzalez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third. Jaime Ortiz was 2-for-4.
Mayaguez: Randy Ruiz was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once. Michael Taylor (Washington) was 2-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Jeremy Kehrt (Boston) pitched five innings, allowing one run on two hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
The game: Gonzalez homered in the first to give Caguas a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Taylor singled in one and Vargas doubled in two to put Mayaguez up 3-1. Caguas tied it in the seventh on Abreu's two-run homer. In the bottom of the seventh, Vargas singled in what turned out to be the winning run. Caguas did not get a man on base after the Abreu homer.
PONCE 1, SANTURCE 0 IN SANTURCE
Ponce: Jordan Lennerton (Detroit) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once. Reymond Fuentes (San Diego) was 1-for-3 with a walk. Joel Piniero (remember him?) struck out six in five innings, giving up two hits and one walk.
Santurce: Adron Chambers was 4-for-4 with a double and a triple. Jack Lopez was 2-for-4 with a double. Jorge Martinez (Kansas City) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The game: Three singles and a double play produced the game's lone run in the second inning. Santurce had a leadoff triple in the first, runners on first and third with one out in the sixth, and the bases loaded with one out in the eighth. The game ended when pinch-runner Dickie Thon was thrown out trying to score from second on a single with two out in the ninth.
