Dominican Digest: Games of 12/12

A big day for Jorge Polanco.  Rosario was Wilin to lead Aguilas.  Errors cost Oriente.

ESCOGIDO 11, ESTE 1 IN ESCOGIDO

Twins:  Jorge Polanco (Escogido) was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Aderlin Mejia (Escogido) was used as a pinch-hitter and was 0-for-1.

Este:  Mayo Acosta (Tampa Bay) was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.  Cesar Puello (Mets) was 2-for-3.  Alen Hanson (Pittsburgh) was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Escogido:  Erik Gonzalez (Cleveland) was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in three.  Gregory Polanco (Pittsburgh) was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.  Carlos Pimentel (Cubs) pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fourth, when Escogido scored five.  Erick Almonte and Gonzalez each had a two-run single in the inning.  Acosta hit his home run in the fifth, but Escogido got the run back in the bottom of the fifth and went on to score two in the sixth and three in the seventh.

AGUILAS 5, LICEY 4 IN AGUILAS

Licey:  Leonys Martin (Texas) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a home run.  Jordany Valdespin was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring three times.  Francisley Bueno (Kansas City) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Aguilas:  Wilin Rosario (Colorado) was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, his fourth.  Andy Marte was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Francisco Pena (Kansas City) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

The game:  Martin homered and Wilson Valdez had an RBI single to give Licey a 2-0 lead in the second.  In the bottom of the second, Pena's two-run double tied the score.  Engle Beltre (Texas) delivered a run-scoring single in the fifth to give Licey a 3-2 lead, but in the bottom of the sixth Rosario hit a three-run homer to give Aguilas a lead it would not relinquish.  Licey got within one in the ninth and had the bases loaded with two out.

CIBAO 5, ORIENTE 2 IN ORIENTE

Cibao:  Francisco Peguero (Baltimore) was 2-for-3 with a home run (his fourth), scoring twice and driving in two.  Maikel Franco (Philadelphia) was 1-for-2 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Trevor Reckling struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Oriente:  Alfredo Marte (Arizona) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Leandro Castro (Philadelphia) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Manauris Baez struck out five in 4.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk.

The game:  Peguero homered in the second to give Cibao a 1-0 lead.  A sacrifice fly tied it in the fourth and Castro's RBI single in the sixth put Oriente up 2-1.  The lead held up until the ninth,  when the second Oriente error of the inning allowed both the tying run and the go-ahead run to score.  Franco tripled in an insurance run and came around to score on a Jonathan Diaz (Toronto) single to make it 5-2.  Oriente went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
