Mexican Matchups: Games of 12/17

We have a Twin to follow in the Mexican League!  Navojoa gets Sanitized.

CULIACAN 12, NAVOJOA 2 IN NAVOJOA

Twins:  Brad Boyer (Culiacan) was 2-for-6 with two doubles and two runs.

Culiacan:  Felix Perez was 2-for-6 with a double, scoring three times and driving in two.  Emmanuel Valdez was 1-for-3 with three walks and two runs.  Amauri Sanit pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Novajoa:  Alejandro Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Carlos Orrantia was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring twice.  Hugo Gutierrez struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk.

The game:  Mario Valdez had a two-run single as part of a five-run first inning for Culiacan.  They followed that up with a three-run second and the game was pretty much decided.

MEXICALI 6, LOS MOCHIS 5 IN LOS MOCHIS

Mexicali:  Xorge Carrillo (Mets) was 1-for-5 with a grand slam, his third homer.  Gil Velazquez (Miami) was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Javier Martinez struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up four hits and one walk.

Los Mochis:  Jake Fox was 2-for-5 with a double.  Sergio Perez was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Leonardo Gonzalez pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Carrillo hit his grand slam in the first to give Mexicali a 4-0 lead.  They added one in the second to make it 5-0.  Los Mochis came back with three in the fourth when Perez and Brian Burgamy delivered RBI singles and another run scored on an error.  Velazquez homered in the fifth to make it 6-3, but Los Mochis got two in the seventh on a wild pitch and an RBI ground out to make it 6-5.  They had the tying run on third and got him there again in the eighth, but could not gain the last ninety feet to tie the game.

HERMOSILLO 3, GUASAVE 1 IN GUASAVE

Hermosillo:  Stefan Gartrell was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his second.  Carlos Alberto Gastelum was 3-for-4 with a run.  Edgar Gonzalez pitched six innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Guasave:  Jesus Cota was 1-for-2 with a double and a run.  Marco Tovar pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Gartrell homered to lead off the second and give Hermosillo a 1-0 lead.  A wild pitch made it 2-0 in the fifth.  An RBI ground out in the sixth put Guasave on the board and left them with the tying run on third, but they could not tie the score.  Hermosillo added an insurance run in the ninth.

OBREGON 10, MAZATLAN 3 IN MAZATLAN

Obregon:  Barbaro Canizares was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run (his eighth), scoring twice.  Robert Saucedo was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Alfredo Amezaga was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Mazatlan:  Walter Ibarra (Cubs) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Henry Mateo was 1-for-4 with a walk and a triple, scoring once.  Julio Montoya pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

The game:  Two triples, a double, and a single in the first inning put Mazatlan ahead 3-0.  The rest of the game belonged to Obregon.  Amezaga singled in a run in the third to put Obregon on the board.  A three-run sixth gave Obregon the lead, with Sergio Contreras singling in the tying run and the go-ahead run coming on a sacrifice fly.  Canizares homered in the eighth to provide and insurance run and a five-run ninth put the game out of reach.
