Man, I love these guys. As much as I like some of their earlier, noisier albums, their 3 record run of Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, Misery is a Butterfly, and 23 is amazing. Grazie, and Arigatoo gozaimasu!
(And fix the spelling, will ya? Blonde Redhead. For future generations.)
I'm not the hugest fan of 23 or Penny Sparkle but they're an incredibly consistent band and one of my favorites. I'm glad I got to see them play "Melody of Certain Three" live, that's high on my list of favorite songs ever.
Yeah, Penny Sparkle seemed a little too sterile and left me a bit cold, but 23 has arguably 3 of the coolest songs they've done (the title track, Dr Strangeluv, and Publisher.) The whole record just soars and glides like a spaceship.
I would add "Spring and By Summer Fall" to that list. Those starry guitars that delineate the song are just... perfect.
That's a great song, too. The whole record is sublime.
I was briefly familiar with them in the late 90s.
My general remembrance of their sound: Sonic Youth but a bit different.
Their first record was produced by Steve Shelley for his Smells Like Records label, so the SY tag has always followed them around. A lot longer than it should have, really. That said, some of the early stuff bears more than a passing resemblance.
Geez, next you'll want fully baked as well. Now get off my lawn.
Fine. Make me feel like I don't blong here.
Naw, you're always welcome. I count you as one of my great musical Sherpas
