Mexican Matchups: Games of 1/1

The first day of the playoffs.  A boot was made for walking off in Navojoa.  A comeback in Hermosillo.

NAVOJOA 4, LOS MOCHIS 3 IN NAVOJOA (10 INNINGS)

Los Mochis:  Ramon Orantes was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run.  Sergio Perez was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Tomas Solis pitched six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Navojoa:  Jon Weber was 4-for-5 with two runs.  Rolando Acosta was 1-for-3 with two walks and a double, driving in one.  Jose Oyervidez struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on six hits and one walk.

The game:  An RBI double by Acosta and a run-scoring single by Carlos Orrantia gave Navojoa a 2-0 lead in the third.  Jason Bourgeois singled in a run in the fourth to put Los Mochis on the board and Orantes homered to tie it at two in the seventh.  A bases-loaded walk put Navojoa back in front at 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, but Perez doubled in a run in the eighth to tie it back up at three.  In the tenth, Weber singled with one out and went to second on a wild pitch.  An intentional walk and an accidental walk loaded the bases, still with one out, and an error brought home the winning run.

MEXICALI 4, CULIACAN 2 IN MEXICALI

Twins:  Brad Boyer (Culiacan) was 1-for-4 with a walk.

Culiacan:  Luis Alfonso Cruz was 3-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer.  Felix Perez (Cincinnati) was 1-for-4 with a run.  Marcos Camarena (Mets) retired all eight batters he faced with one strikeout.

Mexicali:  Ben Guez (Detroit) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs.  Oscar Robles was 2-for-4 with a run.  Edgar Osuna pitched 5.2 innings. allowing one run on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  A sacrifice fly put Mexicali on the board in the second and a Guez homer made it 2-0 after three.  An error and a wild pitch plated a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to build the lead to 4-0.  Mexicali needed them, because in the sixth, Culiacan got a two-run homer from Cruz to cut the margin to 4-2.  However, Culiacan never got a man past first base after that.

HERMOSILLO 7, GUASAVE 5 IN HERMOSILLO

Guasave:  Japhet Amador (Houston) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Eduardo Arredondo was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Juan Delgadillo struck out eight in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.

Hermosillo:  Yunesky Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in three.  Heber Gomez was 3-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Bryan Evans (Miami) pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Gomez singled in a run in the third to give Hermosillo a 1-0 lead, but Amador doubled in two in the fourth to put Guasave up 2-1.  Sanchez homered in the bottom of the fourth to tie it at two, but Guasave got the lead back in the fifth on Arredondo's squeeze bunt.  It looked like the lead might hold up, but Hermosillo struck for five in the eighth to take control of the game.  Carlos Alberto Gastelum singled in a run to tie it up, and two-run two-out singles by Sanchez and Jesus Loya (Boston) made it 7-3.
