Friday Music Day: Jan 10, 2014

Nothing new to add to my 2013 best-of list yet, and nothing from 2014, either.
I read yesterday that Amiri Baraka died. I've got a few records with him on it. One of my faves after the break. Language warning.

    1. I can imagine Jeff putting on his vestments with Back in Black blaring on the stereo.

In fact I could easily see a sermon created by using these song titles.

      1. I can imagine Jeff putting on his vestments with Back in Black blaring on the stereo.

yup, i imagined the exact same thing as soon as i read that.

        1. I realize that the Methodist Church allows their pastors to wear Khaki's and a plaid shirt from JCP but if done in service of the Lord, those are vestments.

          1. I don't wear vestments, but I've never worn a plaid shirt, either. It's always suit and tie. With a white shirt, so I don't have to worry about whether the shirt goes with the suit.

  6. Hey, music loving Citizens. It appears that in 2013 I bought exactly two albums released in 2013. One was featured by hj and the other by free in the best of 2013 video series. So if someone wants to grab my video slot on Monday and play something we haven't heard, that would be great. Just let me know. (Otherwise I'll come up with . . . something. Don't know what.)

    1. Stop the presses! I just realized there's a third 2013 album. So just, uh, keep calm and carry on. Or whatever.

    *Notes:
    5. D/led this over the weekend. Doesn't pop immediately like "Shout It Out" did, but I'll give it some more chances.
    7. The first time I heard Jhonn Balance's Voice was on this unlisted bonus track to this EP (Which I found new yet out of print at Ernie November's and bought because I recognized the name from their remixes of Nine Inch Nails (on the EPs Fixed and Closer)). I think he hits the perfect voice for a song that's triply about alchemy, hallucinogens, and sodomy.
    8. Back when I liked Moby's sound (pre-18), I saw him in concert twice and he finished with this song whose title also its max BPM. He didn't really play it, just danced a bit and then JC-posed atop his keyboard at the climax. Still, it was a cool way to finish the shows.
    9. Brother-in-law's band. They played last night at Triple Rock but I missed it.

Starts and Ends with Bloodshot, with Coil, BPB, and Dilloway in the middle. How very me.

    1. So you checking out Ha Ha Tonka tonight? They're in the big room I think. That's quite the jump from Varsity, Turf Club etc.

I'm not going but I will be at the Driftwood Char Bar (Pirate and Strat know where it's at) to celebrate Elvis, Bowie, Jimmy Page Birthday bash

      1. Alas, no. Gastroenteritis has taken its course through the house and even if I'm not on the list, we're all beat and the house is a pit and we're still recovering from Christmas season activities.
Plus, I just found out about it like a week ago.

They've played the Mainroom once before opening for ____ _____ and His Family Band.
(I want to say "Robert Johnson")

  9. 10 Albums I'm trying out on my "Things I missed in 2013" list

    Deafheaven - Sunbather
    QOTSA - ...Like Clockwork
    Savages - Silence Yourself
    Mikal Cronin - MCII
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest

    17 Pygmies - Isabel
Prog rock. I enjoyed their Celestina albums, and this is the beginning of their new set. Textura Review.

Donato Dozzy - Plays Bee Mask
    John Roberts - Fences
    DJ Koze - Amygdala

These three are from Little White Earbuds top 10 albums list.

    Dan Friel - Total Folklore
From the review at A Closer Listen - "Pleasant pop hooks surface from beneath a near deafening amount of indecipherable analogue noise and hiss to form an eerily enjoyable and intense album."

    * Another Morning Stoner - ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Source Tags and Codes
    * Hatred of Music I - Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972

    * Touching the Roof of the Sun - Indian Jewelry - Totaled

    1. Re: LWE
I wouldn't and didn't put Koze that high, but it's a decent album. Love the cover art.
I wouldn't and didn't put Oneohtrix Point Never that high, and I think I'm going to give up on Lopatin.

      1. I find that any electronic music review site usually only has one or two things I actually like in their entire year-end lists. Either my tastes are too narrow or electronic is too wide of a category.

I've never found anything by Oneohtrix Point Never that I liked even a little.

I know nothing of the Koze album except what I heard in the sample there. Liked it enough to merit a closer look/listen.

        1. I gave R Plus 7 a few spins, and other than a few fifteen to twenty second intervals, it always just comes across as a jarbled mess of ideas without any context or order. I guess some people really dig that, but for me, his music is constantly irritating. I'm not planning on giving whatever he does next a try.

          1. The "Returnal" remixes with Antony at least have Antony.
I have 4 albums in my iTunes and I keep trying. Why do I keep trying?
I think the first of those four albums (the one with "Returnal") probably has some decent points, noisiness that he's since ditched.
Maybe I want to see him get better with that sound.

  10. Amazon has a huge $5 MP3 sale going on right now. So far I've got two of the American discs I don't have and Lou Reed's Transformer in my cart.

    1. Oooohh, there's Stankonia. I have a $25 certificate from work, so I can get one more for free.

        1. Dammit! And in the process of trying to move the two albums to my phone's SD card, I managed to wipe out my entire music folder. I'd be madder, but I at least have all of my songs on Google.

    1. This reminds me that I make a few Diamanda Galas jokes now and then (e.g. "Looking forward to 'Diamanda Galas Week' on American Idol"), but I really only know of her by reputation. Anything to recommend?

      1. That's the only record of hers I have--it's a live double album. Some of it is too dark for my taste. Seriously, she makes half of cheaptoy's bands sound like the Archies. But when she lets even the tiniest bit of light in, Lordy she can bring it. I bought La Serpenta Canta primarily for her amazing cover of the Motown staple "My World is Empty." Bloody brilliant.
