Venezuelan View: Games of 1/15

Day fourteen of the playoffs.  Twins didn't do much.  Zulia put it away early.

ANZOATEGUI 4, LA GUAIRA 1 IN LA GUAIRA

Twins:  Eduardo Escobar (Anzoategui) was 0-for-5.

Anzoategui:  Oscar Salazar was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Jose Castillo was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Daryl Thompson pitched six innings, giving up one run on two hits and one walk with one strikeout.

La Guaira:  Joe Thurston was 2-for-3 with a run.  Junior Guerra struck out nine in 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk.

The game:  There was no score until the fourth, when a pair of singles followed by a pair of force outs plated one for La Guaira.  In the fifth, Castillo singled, stole second, and scored on a Luis Nunez single to tie the score.  It stayed 1-1 until the eighth.  The first two Anzoategui batters went out, but a pair of singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Salazar doubled them both home, and Castillo singled in Salazar to make it 4-1.  La Guaira did not advance anyone past first base after that.

ZULIA 9, CARACAS 4 IN ZULIA

Twins:  Oswaldo Arcia (Zulia) was 0-for-4 with an RBI.

Caracas:  Alex Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third.  Jesus Aguilar (Cleveland) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run (his third), scoring twice.  Jose Ascanio pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Zulia:  Freddy Galvis (Philadelphia) was 2-for-5 with a double and a homer (his second), scoring twice and driving in four.  Ender Inciarte (Arizona) was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Raul Rivero struck out five in 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and two walks.

The game:  In the first, Inciarte scored from first on a Galvis double and later a pair of productive outs scored Galvis to give Zulia a 2-0 lead.  Zulia added four in the second with Inciarte singling in one and Galvis hitting a three-run homer, to put the game out of reach early.  It was 7-0 after three and 9-0 after seven.  Caracas finally got on the board with three in the eighth and one in the ninth but did not threaten to get back into the game.
