It's been so cold this week, I can't listen to my iPod while walking to the bus or waiting for it: the wires to my headphones become so stiff it's like they're on sticks and pluck themselves right out of my ears.

As a point of random discussion, I completely missed the whole ska train (and the swing train for that matter). Just never did anything for me.
That 3rd Wave ska stuff (Like Mighty Mighty Bosstones) was pretty sucky. Second wave (Specials, The Selector, English Beat...) was pretty good.
I briefly liked Less Than Jake in high school, but I dunno where they fit in the larger picture.
I suppose I'd be referring to the 3rd wave. Wasn't really cognizant of the 2nd.
I had no idea of 2nd wave either. My education on that has been entirely through The Current, and near as I can tell, it has highlights too, but I don't know that it was generally better than 3rd wave.
Well the 2nd wave was really the source of the 3rd. Third wavers weren't sounding like Jamaican ska, they sounded like British ska (which had a punk or post-punk flavor).
1st wave.
I knew Bootsy would come through on the 1st wave. He's old enough to have listened to them bands on his old 78 player . :o)
Too bad you foolishly tossed all your old 78s into the Mississippi. :/
Only the Springsteen 78s.
Mmmm. The Specials. Terry Hall.
I've got a dupe cassette of some of their stuff and his stuff dating from college. I remember "Message to Rudy" and "Ghost Town".
Fishbone got into both the second and third waves. Kindof. Maybe.
No Doubt had some great stuff in the 3rd wave.
The thing with both the Ska and Swing revivals is that a lot of the bands had been doing that stuff for ages and then all a sudden they were nationally popular and on MTV heavy rotation.
I knew swing dancing from before it crossed over and then it was cool when the music was everywhere and I could dance without attracting huge attention. EAR and I still dance from time to time, usually just in our house or at weddings though.
Madness.
I don't know that I was ever "in" to ska, but I listened to enough, and certainly got into swing for a while in high school. I'd agree with Free that most of it was crap in the 3rd wave, except for a few highlight singles here and there ("Impression That I Get", for example). I actually think the best 3rd wave ska band was a Christian group called the OC Supertones. Swing is it's own thing, in my opinion, and has a perfectly acceptable place for occasional listening, such as when dancing at a wedding or cooking a fancy meal.
I certainly like swing music, but that fact is isolated from the whole Swingers/90s swing craze.
I enjoyed swing music a lot when I was in college, just because it's so fun. Plus it was a reason to put on a cute dress and find a good dance partner.
Pfft. Like I need an excuse to do that.
I was really into ska-punk for a hot minute in high school. It's one of the most embarrassing facts about me.
I don't even know you that well and I wouldn't put that fact in the top ten!

E. The Holocene* “Glacial: Kalaallit Nunaat” eis
*Notes:
9. I hate this. Some great mid-90s Pan_Sonic beats, on par with the Osasto EP, but with the guy from Suicide barking all over it. Every song excites me at the start and disappoints me within the next 30 seconds. I need to get it off my iPod. I wonder if the instrumentals were ever released.
E. Based on DG's constant reccs and the fact that his music is almost all free on his bandcamp, I've gotten into the Holocene a bit. He's not far from Aaron Dilloway in sound, but with a highbrow headiness nearing someone like Ryoji Ikeda.
I like eis quite a bit. I think that's because it's very concise. Not enough time for my mind to wander, but enough to make an impact.

The hotel left a CD on our bed yesterday for posting a link to them on Facebook...very nice
Would have been cooler if they'd left a Dambuilders CD. (Used)
Excellent 90's alt-rockers From Honolulu. The violinist Joan Wasser would later go on to record under the moniker Joan as Policewoman. She's also a Johnson in Antony's band.

I saw The Dambuilders with a comp at First Ave long ago. I don't remember if they were headlining or not. I do remember being very interested in the violinist.
I was probably at that show, too. (Saw them twice.) And I definitely shared your interest in Joan.
She's got a new record coming out this Spring, and the advance single sounds pretty interesting (a total doo-wop vibe.)

No "It's a Wonderful World/Somewhere over the Rainbow" by IZ?
It's a freakin' promotional CD, what do you want?
Sorry, I think I may have misread what it is at first.
That's not "Hawaiian Classics", it's "Here's some Hawaiian Music that wasn't too expensive for us to license and which plays in nicely to how we want you to experience your vacation. Come Again."
yep, now you've got it.
what, no Aaron Sala?

The lush chamber pop of this Aussie is well worth seeking out, even if it is hard to find.
