  1. we had sleet between 4AM and 6AM, but for maybe the first time this winter the locals blew the call; we won't be getting all the snow they predicted. still really treacherous outside though

    1. We had rain most of friday, AND I drove home through a tornado warning. WTF? We don't have tornadoes. That's for flyover country.

  2. TPGR* pg 11 morsel: He's driven out, away, east over Vauxhall Bridge in a dented green Lagonda by his batman, a Corporal Wayne.

    Har.

  3. I, too, love desert rains. Desert mud I'm not crazy about, but desert rain has a special beauty. And the clouds rain brings to the desert sky, and the way they channel the light – gorgeous.

  4. Things you can't unsee - after DPWY mentioned Craig Bellamy looked like Macklemore, that's all I think when I see him.

      1. Yes, great anecdote. Also, I loved the writer's ability to subtly and passive-aggressively troll Yankee fans (main NY Times readership, one would expect).

          1. speaking of trolling, I heard Jim Bouton doing the "Not My Job" bit on WWDTM this morning. He had an awesome anecdote about pitching in Fenway.

  5. Sunderland loses to City 3-1 in the League Cup final. Played well and had the lead at the half, but City just had some scorers that couldn't be held down the entire time.

That cup run was a lot of fun, it was pretty cool to be playing for a spot in the Europa League. Since City are almost assuredly going to the champions league, 6th place in the league (currently Everton) is now a Europa spot.

  6. I love reading lips on sports casts. Claude Giroux quite clearly just said "what the f**k is this sh*t?!"

  7. Arcia just put a real charge into one, if the Gameday graphics are to be believed.

  8. Checking on on New Guy - Karen O looked gorgeous on the Oscars just now. Did he have a heart attack? Cuz I nearly did.

  9. apropos of our recent thread on saving for retirement/kids' college: The saver's credit is a refundable tax credit for low- and moderate-income singles and couples. It rewards savers with a credit equal to up to 50% of their retirement contributions in any given year.

holy crap. I'd never heard of that before. Of course, you have to have income under $59K (married filing jointly; or $29,500 filing single) to qualify for any of this credit.

Refundable credit means it reduces your tax dollar-for-dollar, and you can even get back more than what your tax otherwise would have been (a negative income tax). If your income is below $35,500 for the year (married filing joint), you get paid 50 cents for every dollar you put into an IRA up to $2,000 (50 pct of $4,000 contributions).

from the IRS (the second link above):

Retirement savings eligible for the credit

The Saver’s Credit can be taken for your contributions to a traditional or Roth IRA; your 401(k), SIMPLE IRA, SARSEP, 403(b), 501(c)(18) or governmental 457(b) plan; and your voluntary after-tax employee contributions to your qualified retirement and 403(b) plans.

Rollover contributions aren’t eligible for the Saver’s Credit. Also, your eligible contributions may be reduced by any recent distributions you received from a retirement plan or IRA.

Example: Jill, who works at a retail store, is married and earned $30,000 in 2013. Jill’s husband was unemployed in 2013 and didn’t have any earnings. Jill contributed $1,000 to her IRA in 2013. After deducting her IRA contribution, the adjusted gross income shown on her joint return is $29,000. Jill may claim a 50% credit, $500, for her $1,000 IRA contribution.

So, basically, if your income fits and you have a couple hundred bucks available, you have until April 14 to open an IRA or similar account, or contribute to an existing one, and get paid by the feds to do it.
