Linds generally makes Reubens for St. Patrick's day, but since we're trying to watch what we're eating, she made some pretty tasty Rachels last night, instead.
A little less than half Irish.
Guinness, Redbreast 12-year and Knappogue Castle Whiskey (1995).
Corned beef & cabbage in the crock at home...I can watch what I eat on Fridays.
Welp, I'm not observant, so we'll be doing Guinness stew and sweet potato pies for dinner tonight.
Corned beef in the crockpot as we speak. I ain't an iota Irish, but the food/culture overlap appeals to me. I'll make something special on May 5th too.
Reubens for this guy.
too many leftovers in the house for me to start the corned beef yet. But I may pick one up tonight or tomorrow, what with The Boy returning tonight.
My preferred method: crock-potted in apple cider/apple juice on low all day, then removed and roasted in a medium oven for the last hour or so. Defat (and, if you must, strain) the liquid in the crock and use to boil potatoes, carrots, and (at the last minute) cabbage.
I am getting hungry just thinking about it.
I'm just going simple, straight up crockpot this year. Went home over lunch to throw in the veggies. Smelled amazing. Cabbage added when I get home, eat some time later.
Some approximation of Reubens for leftovers.
We also have leftover french onion soup in the fridge. I'm eating well this week.
Guinness stew for us tonight as well. Maybe some soda bread, it's up to the wife. I'll find out when I get home.
The traditional Irish meal of burritos for me.
I'm going to celebrate this day the same way a smidgen over a quarter of my ancestors* did: Guinness and the generic knockoff of Lucky Charms cereal. I haven't had Guinness in years (it was the first darker beer I ever truly enjoyed), I'm interested to see how it holds up to a broadened palate.
* I identify more with the Bohemian side of the family tree, even though I'm the teensiest bit more Irish than Bohemian.
I also decided to be "that guy" this year, although not " that guy".
for some reason, the bottled always comes across as almost cloyingly sweet for me, although I love it on draft or from the charged draft cans. I like the flinty, metallic quality of Irish stout on draft (see also: Murphy's) way more than the super-sweet bottled extra stout.
I'm finding that I'll probably just stick with the tap version from now on.
Playing with Legos are fun. Playing with a Rubik's Cube is, too. Therefore...

...playing with a lego made out of Rubik's cubes is fun?
Also true. Youtube embedding is less fun. Here's the link, since I know how to do that.
Now that's cool...
The prodigal son returns tonight for spring break. I will be busy hiding the good beer.
He probably doesn't even know the difference, seeing as he's still too young to drink, right?
uh huh. Legally too young.
but he likes to text me pictures of the beers he and his buddies are tasting. Any time a college kid is drinking (in moderation) for the culinary/gustatory experience, rather than to get drunk, that's a good thing, right? I'm claiming victory.
Nate Silver's 538 relaunched. In the sports section, I found a short piece about baseball's most surprising good and bad seasons, from the last eight years. Morneau makes an appearance on the good list for his 2010 season. He also appears on the bad list for the 2011 season. Casilla makes an appearance and so does Mike Lamb.
Shouldn't be too hard.
ID the AU -- which Twins player (former or current) writes this name on his checks?
Jarrod Parker is having TJ surgery for the second time. A.J. Griffin is also probably out for the first month, so the A's might be interested in a starter that is out of options, such as Deduno, Diamond and Worley.
Wow. Kris Medlen also is having TJ surgery for the second time. That has to really suck.
boo-urns. That will take a lot of wind out of the A's sails. At least Kazmir has looked very good this spring.
Amusing GoT graphs. I've spoilered my favorite, just in case it says something someone doesn't know. Consider yourself warned if you look and that turns out to be the case.
Glen Perkins doesnt need to spend any of his new found fortune on fish sticks
nice catch!
Nice specimen, there.
After the discussions on reading apps we've had here lately, this article on The Truth about Speed Reading caught my eye. Even better, it has a link to a reading-speed test that might interest some of you. I'm a compulsive test-taker, so I took it- twice.
Compulsive is exactly the word for it. I took it three times before it looped back into something I'd already read, making further takings useless.
Now, I probably should've just read like I'd normally read, but that would be silly. May as well push that number as high as it'd go.
May as well push that number as high as it'd go.
Heh, that's exactly what I did. I improved 7 WPM from the first sample to the second, plus I got all three questions right instead of just two.
Local Grouper at the grocery store was $57, must be a slow fishing season. I went for the $4.75 country style pork ribs.
Got one of the hotel dudes to fire up the grill for me. Sliced onions, pineapple, thin-sliced sweet potato, pork ribs, and Chinese barbecue sauce. There was a long line to the hotel restaurant whilst this Citizen was busy at the grill.
so, I started a batch of CH's mustard. The plan is to have the corned beef and cabbage with it on thursday or friday. As shown on the BookFace, I used Boddington's rather than a dark malt beverage, because my local store was -- gasp! -- OUT of Guinness today when I bought the corned beef and cabbage and red potatoes. I omitted the cinnamon (the Mrs is allergic) and added a bit of turmeric, but otherwise am following the recipe carefully.
Hmm. I've never made it with anything lighter than a porter before; I'll be curious to hear how it turns out.
Yea, your recipe has a bunch of "warm" spices probably better suited for a porter or sweet stout. I probably should have cut back on the clove and allspice.
I also went with about 3 parts brown mustard to one part yellow.
Nice. Keep me posted on how it turns out!
Oooh. I need to try a "new Miller Fourt-chooon." Did you know that it is "undistilled"?
Gawd, I hate marketing ijiocy.
Truth in advertising!
How does it compare to Bud Black?
Bud could pitch. The "Miller Fourtchoon" guy just throws crap.
Minnesota Twins Double-A center fielder Byron Buxton, the No. 1 prospect in minor league baseball, sat out Monday’s camp game with a bruised left elbow.
Buxton, who suffered the injury diving for a ball in the outfield on Sunday, was examined by Twins’ doctors and the issue was not deemed serious.
Over/under on date for TJ surgery starts at 6 mos. from today.
I'll take 11 1/2 months: right as spring training starts.
Or maybe Correa is the top prospect due to Buxton imploding from injuries.
Interesting story from Chicago about how US Cellular Field is frozen and its going to be a close call to unfreeze it before opening day.
Trey's Mets got their first win today. He started and went 3 shutout innings in the 2-0 win. He struck out 4 and walked 3 or 4, mostly because of a tiny strike zone. Trey, batting cleanup, drove in the second run with a double in the first inning. The 2 runs were the first runs his team had scored in three games. He has 2 of their 4 hits this season.

I got it with the hint. Otherwise
Believe it or not, I got that one.
I did not get it.
Yep, that was my problem, too. I could not figure out what the last name could possibly be.
Philo might be amused by this shirt. Other GW fans are flipping out because we have such a pointlessly stupid complex.
With selection Sunday behind us and iffy basketball ahead, John Bois selects the winners alphabetically.
Thanks for linking. That's the best.

That one is good, but I really enjoyed this one
Damn, accidentally hit mail.
This one:
That is outstanding.
