Minor Details: Games of April 16

A Red Wings comeback falls short.  A Miracle comeback succeeds!  Scott Diamond's struggles continue.

PAWTUCKET 7, ROCHESTER 6 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Wilkin Ramirez was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Dan Rohlfing was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Eric Farris was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Deolis Guerra pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and one walk.  Matt Hoffman struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.  Ryan Pressly struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Alex Hassan was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  Brock Holt was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Heiker Meneses was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.

The game:  It was scoreless through two, but Pawtucket broke through for three in the third and four in the fourth to go ahead 7-0.  They had three singles and two doubles in the third and three singles, two doubles, and a walk in the fourth.  Rochester got back into the game with a four-run fourth of their own.  Farris had an RBI single, Rohlfing a two-run single, and Doug Bernier an RBI single in the inning.  The Red Wings added one in the fifth and one in the sixth, each time on a productive out, to cut the lead to 7-6.  They had their chances, putting a man on third with two out in the seventh and with on out in the eighth and putting a man on second with one out in the ninth, but could not tie the score.

Of note:  Eduardo Nunez was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Chris Parmelee was 0-for-5.  Scott Diamond struggled again, going four innings and surrendering seven runs on eleven hits and two walks.  He did strike out four.  In three starts (nine innings), he has an ERA of 15.00 and a WHIP of 3.56.

Rained out.

FORT MYERS 6, CHARLOTTE 5 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice.  Adam Brett Walker II was I-for-V with a double, scoring once and driving in II.  John Murphy was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Steven Gruver pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Thomas Coyle was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Kes Carter was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Max Tissenbaum was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

The game:  Charlotte got single runs in the first and second, and Fort Myers tied it with single runs in the fourth and fifth.  In the bottom of the fifth, RBI singles by Carter and Josh Sale put the Stone Crabs ahead 4-2.  The score stayed there until the eighth.  The first two Miracle batters went out, but then Kepler singled, Walker II doubled to score him, Mike Gonzales was hit by a pitch, Travis Harrison singled to tie the score, and Murphy singled in two to give Fort Myers a 6-4 lead.  In the bottom of the eighth an RBI triple by Andrew Toles put the tying run on third with one out, and in the ninth Charlotte put the tying run on third with two out, but both times Brian Gilbert got out of the jam to get the save.

Of note:  Tyler Duffey started and pitched 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

SOUTH BEND 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Ethan Mildren struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks.  Alex Muren struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Stryker Trahan was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Daniel Palka was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Adam Miller started and struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

The game:  South Bend opened the scoring in the fourth when Trahan doubled and scored on Palka's single.  Andrew Velazquez homered in the fifth to make it 2-0, but Cedar Rapids got one back in the bottom of the fifth when Kanzler tripled and scored on a Logan Wade single.  Trahan hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Silver Hawks a 4-1 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh, Vielma led off with a double and scored on a pair of ground outs.  The Kernels got men on first and third in the eighth and brought the tying run up to bat in the ninth, but could not score.

Of note:  Zach Larson was 1-for-4 with a double.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-4.
