May 8, 2014: Bad Habit

I can't fall asleep after getting up and performing basically any act. Yesterday after driving my wife and daughters to the airport at 3:30am, I really never fell asleep again. Hopefully you won't see me up early today.

  1. Do we need a separate page on the site to list all our scars?

I sliced a finger once cutting a block of cheese. Not too bad. Worst was my 12th birthday. Slipped on a chain link fence and my knee caught a spiky part. Tore open my leg and needed 20 stitches. There were fat cells on the fence for quite a while afterwards.

    1. Sliced the tip of my finger off slicing eggplant on a meat slicer on Valentines Day 1994 at Ciatti's in Woodbury. Eggplant's skin is very "sticky"...pushing it through slicer by hand... you can figure out the rest. No lie... took the 1/4" slice of finger, taped it back on the end of my finger, bandaged up, and cooked the rest of the night. The re-attached slice is still there and a healthy part of my finger... looks a little weird though as it grew on a little crooked. Deep scar on another finger (above the knuckle) from attempting to sharpen a knife lefthanded... knife missed the sharpener and cut to the bone. Also a broken tooth when a mutual friend of mine and Twayn threw a football at my beer bottle as I was drinking it.

My daughter has the bragging rights. Scar from ear to ear over the top of her head due to surgery as a 1 yr old. Skull had fused too early. She also has a 2 inch scar on her forehead from climbing on a shelf at day care that was not anchored. She got to the top and it toppled on top of her and left a huge gash. Apparently, she bled like crazy, as there was a beach ball sized blood stain on the carpet. I can only imagine the reaction of the other 20+ kids in that daycare center.

      1. I was going to stay out of this, but since it's still going...

I fell at the end of a moving walkway at the St. Louis and got caught, leaving 4 small scars on my stomach (and completely totaling my shirt).

I have a scar under my lower lip from when I was a bit over 1. I was in a high chair eating a candy cane, I stood up and fell down, biting through my lower lip. Apparently, there were white chips all over and my mom thought that I'd knocked my teeth out.

        1. I fell at the end of a moving walkway at the St. Louis and got caught

Well, that just justified my fear of moving walkways and escalators...

          1. I'm not afraid of using them, but I'm cautious and always do a little bunny hop at the end. I'm sure a 6 foot tall 27 year old looks ridiculous doing it, but I'll be damned if my shoelaces get sucked into one of those things.

        2. Scar from a second-degree burn on my hand sustained during my time cooking downtown:

Our executive chef/owner was involved in some kind of small weekend cooking class that came to our kitchen on Saturday. We were still open that evening, so the class (all home cooks, no culinary students) was sharing space with all the cooks on the line. I had a small pot of something going on the stove, and one of the students in the class knocked my handle over an unoccupied 40,000 BTU burner. I don't know how long it was there, but when I picked it up the part of the handle that stuck out from my hand towel started branding me. Once I realized what was happening I had to carry the pot back to my station on the other side of the line in order to avoid dropping/spilling it on the students. I worked until 2am with a glove on, then went home. When I woke up I had an enormous blister on my palm, which I lanced so I could go back to work. It was disturbing how much liquid came out of my hand, but the divot in my palm for the next six months was even more weird.

Other than that, small scars on my hands from work, and a small scar on my forehead, mostly hidden by my eyebrow now, from when I did a jumping header into a radiator at daycare. I've been pretty lucky at keeping my body intact for the most part.

          1. That reminds me a lot of the time I spilled fryer grease on my arm while filtering out the fryer at the DQ. Fortunately, it was about halfway through the process, so the oil wasn't as hot, but it still hurt like hell. The fill tube came un-secured and sprayed straight up in the air. I had a whole bunch of blisters from elbow to wrist that looked almost like one big one. Went to the emergency room, got it wrapped up and went back to finish my shift. I don't have any scars from it, though, good times nontheless.

            1. Went to the emergency room, got it wrapped up and went back to finish my shift.

ahh, back when hard work meant something! None of this postmodern, namby-pamby "worker's comp" crap!!!!111one1111!!!!

I never managed to spill fryer grease on myself (working at the li'l Redhead-with-Pigtails franchise). My best move -- whomever was working the grill on close also was responsible for disassembling the chicken holding oven apparatus for cleaning. But, as this was back in my power-lifting, shot-putting days, I couldn't get my forearm in far enough (because not enough vertical clearance!) to unscrew the two screws in the back interior holding internal parts in. So somebody else had to do it! Sweet!!!!!

      2. My mom lost her fingertip a few years ago in a pneumatic wood splitter incident. She called me at work on her way to the Emergency Room and told me I should stop up and say hi.

She also kept the fingertip in a baggie, just in case they could put it back on. That was one of the more upsetting things I've ever seen.

  2. My brother bit through his tongue playing football. Needed five stiches in his tongue and a shot of novacaine directly into the tip of his tongue.

  3. Gleeman and the Geek got a mention on Olbermann's show last night. Pretty funny.

  4. I got to wondering about why baseball games last 9 innings and came across this.

Nine Innings. The Knickerbocker draft rules proposed having games end after seven innings (with extra innings if needed), instead of at the end of whatever inning saw one or both clubs reach a score of 21 aces. Convention delegates, however, decided on a nine inning game, with Knickerbocker Louis F. Wadsworth advocating this outcome contrary to his own Club’s recommendation. The rationale for a choice of nine frames was evidently not recorded. We now know[8] that in 1856 the average game (still played to 21 aces) had lasted only about 6 innings, and thus the 1857 convention was defining a game that was to be 50 percent longer. A good many of the 1856 games were suspended due to darkness, and longer contests would arguably make things worse; however, history has certainly proved the nine-inning decision to be both workable and durable.

Apologies if this is old news to everyone else here.

    1. Cool stuff. I love reading about baseball history. I wish I had more time to do it.

    1. Both real and WGOM-style. I loaded up with coffee to face the day and arrived at work half an hour ago, only to find that they'd changed my shift and I wasn't due there for another hour and a half. They never call about that. Sigh.

      1. That would have been a pretty great time to chill in those home theater sample rooms they used to have.

  5. NBA playoffs:

Indiana rises from the dead! Roy Hibbert is apparently not finished! I fully expected them to be dispatched in this round by the upstart Wizards and that might still happen. After all, even when Hibbert gets almost 30, they still barely won at home. But, this is a series now.

Durant and Westbrook right the ship and blow out the Clippers. KD is everybody's darling (with good reason) and this series would be a terrific WCF, but of course, this is the West, so 2nd round.

  6. And since no one here has mentioned it yet, Guerrier is back. Yay.

Edit: Damn, I missed it- I should have started with, "Speaking of self-inflicted wounds..."

  7. I am so excited; Will we see a pitcher PH/PR today?!

    Make it happen Gardy.

    Escobar; does he catch too?

      1. According to Twitter: Fuld has a bad headache so Escobar is the centerfielder and Twins have a one man bench.

        1. Escobar has played 1 game in the OF in the minors. One. He's never played CF anywhere. Danny Santana has played 23 games in CF in the minors. So let's put Escobar in CF and Santana at SS.

          1. Can't trust the rookie with the most important defensive position.

            Oh, wait....

        2. At first I thought you were were kidding. With an OF of Herrmann, Escobar and Kubel, I hope Corriea can keep it on the ground.

          1. All three are better than Colabello or Willingham. Of course, the big problem is no CF, not that, that has ever happened before. For now, I'll just start dreaming of an August outfield of Buxton, Hicks and Arcia.

  8. One of the downsides of staying in hotels. The guests in the room next to me were rather noisily amorous last night. Until about 1AM.

    1. Couple in the next room
      Bound to win a prize
They've been going at it all night long

  9. I've got to get down to brass tax for now-through-Monday on work+life+scouts+actuarial education, Anyone want to take tomorrow's "Friday Music Day" post?

              1. Really, I spelt it that was to create some self-sabotaging diversion that I would not be able to pull myself from.

    1. I can do it. I've been thinking about writing up something on my favorite albums for the first third of the year. I may as well share that here.

  10. Our two-year anniversary is coming up with July and we just booked our honeymoon. It's going to be really hard to be away from the boy, but this may be the only time we'll have for years to actually do this, as when he's older we'll want to take him on any vacations. We'll be in the east Caribbean, my first time looking at an ocean, unless you count Puget Sound.

We'll be in Miami for one night/morning. For those who have been there, is there anything we must do in Miami?

    1. Drugs!

...okay, I've never been to Miami.

The Milkmaid and I reached ten years in December, and I have a lead on a honeymoon as of this week, a decade after my company went out of business and ruined our prospects of having one at the time. At work, the highest-performing stores get points that can be used for trips and such. Our TV department was top-five in the company last month so we all got a ton of points. I already had a lot, but I've crossed over into the range where I can take her somewhere for a few days. Meanwhile, my antsy co-workers always get trigger fingers when they get points and blow them on gift cards. Poor bastards.

    2. I've managed to avoid Miami whenever I've been in that area. Key Largo is only an hour away.

Spooky, I think you need to honeymoon in Ft. Myers next spring 😉

    3. For those who have been there, is there anything we must do in Miami?
Cafecita at Versailles in Little Havana.

  11. Following up on Rhu_Ru's (?) comment that the 4ltr already has an AL East countdown going: Today's episode of Effectively Wild featured Jay Jaffe talking about entropy & the race in the AL East. I couldn't even bring myself to listen. C'mon, BP; it's only 08 May!

    1. And there's another episode of Effectively Wild I'll delete. Makes it easier to keep up with the backlog.

      1. I delete any EW I don't listen to on the day it's released. I've tried to stay current, but I just don't see much point in listening to stuff that's a few days out of date, at least not when I have so much to listen to.

  12. Mags:

I am heading to Europe on Saturday, will be in the Prague area on Tuesday and Wednesday. Only Tuesday night is available for any fun as I will be flying to Nantes on Wednesday. I do have plans lined up with my colleagues over there, though.

    1. I get to make my first European trip the first two weeks of June. I'm far more excited about this trip than I was about going to China. Plus, my schedule ended up making me stay in Manchester with Friday - Sunday off of work. Might have to find a pub or two....

    2. Say hi to the city for me. It's a fantastic place. I'm sure your colleagues will show you around well. If anyone offers you slivovic, watch out, that stuff is awful, and I drink my moonshinin' cousins product straight from the source. Becherovka, on the other hand, I developed a taste for.

I've been really missing Prague this week for some reason, to the point of making plans to move (again, I know, I know)

  13. Now that we're seemingly close, I suppose I can jinx it all by mentioning it: the Milkmaid has three different (all for great positions) interviews between today and tomorrow, with all three being jobs that would take us back to the Twin Cities area. One of the two today suggested that the job might pigeonhole her into a career path she wasn't looking for, but the other was fantastic, and the one tomorrow (which would by far bring home the most money) is one at which she's been told she has a very legitimate shot. I think there's a pretty good chance we'll be in Minnesota by July.

...the only downside, of course, being that I won't be able to watch the Twins anymore unless I subscribe to cable for the first time in years.

    1. Honestly with the team stinking this bad, it might be cheaper to buy tickets to the remaining home games!

The MLB black out rules are shite.

  14. So, the 4ltr. NFL draft on the main channel, NBA relegated to the B channel. Seriously?

    Yea, I know. Because Money.

    1. I wonder what channel the Stanley Cup playoffs would be shuttled off too is ESPN had those rights...

  15. sometimes, I cant tell if a tweet is serious or not. Like when the Vikings drafted a guy not Johnny Manzel, a person I follow said he is never going to spend money on purple gear ever again.

    1. Not that I was very excited they drafted an outside linebacker, but if that's the straw that breaks that particular camel's back... he must take football way more seriously than is really healthy for him.

      1. seriously.
I like football and all, but I think the Draft (and really all sports drafts, but the NFL draft is such a drawn out process by the 4ltr, and then its 3 days long) are a waste of my time.

    2. I was reading my Twitter feed and I thought there were some OK jokes about names:
Jadeveon Clowney, Blake Bortles, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix*
      These are all real people.

*I was 20 or 21 at the time, so I can't even blame being 13 SelectShow
      1. Seriously, Did Nelson Muntz , Beavis, and Butt-head get together to name the guy?

        1. And he was just drafted by the Packers.

I'm trying to keep a straight face, here.

          1. I've seen his name repeatedly for the past week because of all the coverage. Honestly, I'm cheering for that guy regardless of the sport he plays and the team he plays for.

  16. Florimon and Herrmann sent down, which means Danny Santana still here, the one shortstop that has a chance to be any good, I'm thinking Cristian Guzman before his shoulder problems. Unfortunately, the great ex-Yankee who learned from the Cap'n how to play SS poorly without looking bad at it (at least to the Twins) is up. Sounds like Hicks will be activated tomorrow. Not sure who else will be up. Should be Parmelee, but he's not on the 40-man. Short start by Correia, so it will probably be another pitcher, right? :rollseyes
