Minor Details: Games of May 7

Two fine pitching performances, one of which results in a win.  No offense for Rochester.  Ivory Thomas is on a pace to set some records for walks.

COLUMBUS 7, ROCHESTER 0 IN COLUMBUS

Batting star:  James Beresford was 2-for-4.

PItching star:  Deolis Guerra pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Roberto Perez was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer (his fifth) and two walks, scoring twice.  Giovanny Urshula was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Travis Banwart struck out eight in six innings, allowing three hits and no walks.

The game:  Perez hit a three-run homer in the second for all the runs Columbus would need.  Urhsula's two-run ground-rule double made it 5-0 in the fifth and the Clippers added two more in the eighth.  Rochester did not get a hit until the fourth.  That was the inning they came closest to scoring, as a pair of singles put men on first and third with one out.  The Red Wings also had men on first and third with two out in the seventh.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-4.  Chris Parmelee was 1-for-4.  Brad Nelson was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4.  Eduardo Nunez was 0-for-3.  Wilkin Ramirez was 0-for-3.  Starter Trevor May struck out four in 4.2 innings, but surrendered five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks.

TRENTON 6, NEW BRITAIN 4 IN NEW BRITAIN (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Tony Thomas was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a walk, driving in three.  Kennys Vargas was 3-for-6 with two doubles.

Pitching stars:  Daniel Turpen pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.  Adrian Salcedo struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Kyle Roller was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Dan Fiorito was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer.  Jairo Heredia struck out six in three shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk.

The game:  Two-run homers were key in this game.  Thomas hit a two-run shot in the third to give New Britain a 2-0 lead.  Roller's two-run homer in the fifth tied it.  Mike Kvasnicka doubled in a run in the sixth to give the Rock Cats a 3-2 lead, but Robert Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the sixth to give Trenton a 4-3 lead.  Thomas delivered an RBI single with one-out in the ninth to tie it up and New Britain got the winning run to third with two out, but a strikeout ended the inning.  With two out in the twelfth, Fiorito hit another two-run homer to win the game for the Thunder.

Of note:  Nate Hanson was 0-for-6.  Starter Tyler Duffey pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 6, JUPITER 3 IN JUPITER

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, driving in three.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out seven in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and four walks.  Mason Melotakis struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Blake Barber was 1-for-1 with a two-run homer, his second.  Colin Moran was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Chipper Smith pitched four innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  A wild pitch gave Fort Myers a 1-0 lead in the fourth.  The Miracle took control of the game with a five-run seventh.  Michael drove in three of the runs with a bases-loaded double.  Jupiter tried to get back into the game, scoring three in the ninth, but the Hammerheads did not bring the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-5.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-5 with a run.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-5.

QUAD CITIES 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  J. D. Williams was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Ivory Thomas was 0-for-1 with three walks.

Pitching star:  Kohl Stewart struck out six in five shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Chan Moon was 1-for-1 with four walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Ronnie Mitchell was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  James Ramsey was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  It looked good early, as Cedar Rapids scored twice in the first and once in the second to take a 3-0 lead.  That was all the scoring the Kernels would do, however, and it gave Quad Cities plenty of time to come back.  The River Bandits did nothing against starter Kohl Stewart.  In the sixth, however, with Stewart gone, Quad Cities scored three runs on no hits and six walks to tie the score.  In the eighth, a hit batsman, a double, and two more walks gave the River Bandits the lead.  A sacrifice fly and a pair of singles plated three more and cemented the Quad Cities victory.

Of note:  J. D. Williams was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with a double.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.  Zach Larson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Ivory Thomas has played in 11 games.  He has 23 at-bats and 18 walks.  He is batting .261 with an OBP of .571.
