Minor Details: Games of May 14

A walk-off sacrifice fly for Rochester!  A walkoff walk for New Britain!  Cedar Rapids gets swept for the second straight day.

ROCHESTER 5, COLUMBUS 4 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Chris Herrmann was 2-forr-3 with a double annd a walk, scorrinng onnce and drrivinng inn onne.  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Yohan Pino struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  A. J. Achter struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Elliot Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Carlos Moncrief was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once, and driving in one.

The game:  Ramirez had a two-run single in the first to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.  A triple, a single, and an error tied the score in the second.  Each team scored twice in the sixth, leaving the score tied at four.  Each team threatened in the eighth, but there was no more scoring until the ninth.  Pedro Florimon led off the inning with a double, his first hit of the season as a Red Wing.  He was bunted to third and scored the winning run on a James Beresford sacrifice fly.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-4 with a run.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Florimon was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Starter Scott Diamond pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

NEW BRITAIN 4, PORTLAND 3 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Nate Hanson was 3-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Duffey struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.  Ryan O'Rourke pitched a scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout.  Daniel Turpen struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Mookie Betts was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Henry Ramos was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Starter Henry Owens struck out eight in four shutout innings, giving up no hits and five walks.

The game:  Betts led off the game with a double and scored on a pair of wild pitches to give Portland a 1-0 lead.  A pair of singles and a passed ball made it 2-0 after two.  Each team scored once in the seventh to make it 3-1.  Wimberly led off the ninth with a single, followed by a Tony Thomas double.  Hanson and Vargas delivered RBI singles to tie it up.  Reynaldo Rodriguez singled to load the bases.  Following a force out, Brandon Waring walked to force in the winning run.

Of note:  Rodriguez was 1-for-5.

FORT MYERS 4, BREVARD COUNTY 3 IN BREVARD COUNTY

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, his sixth homer.  Niko Goodrum was 3-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut pitched seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Tim Shibuya pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Tyrone Taylor was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Tom Gorzelanny pitched two shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

The game:  Walker II hit a grand slam in the first inning to give Fort Myers a 4-0 lead.  Two singles, an error, and a sacrifice fly cut the margin to 4-2 in the bottom of the first.  And there things stood until the ninth.  A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for the Manatees with none out.  A short fly and a sacrifice fly made it two out with the score 4-3 and men on first and second.  A ground out ended the game.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-5.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

PEORIA 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Joel Licon was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pitching star:  Kohl Stewart pitched four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Juan Herrera was 2-for-3 with a run.  Jimmy Reed pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Peoria scored on a double play in the first and on an error in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.  RBI singles by Michael Quesada and Licon tied it in the bottom of the fourth.  Herrera doubled and scored in the fifth, but Cedar Rapids tied it in the sixth when Licon again delivered an RBI single.  In the seventh, C. J. McElroy singled, went to second on a bunt, and scored on a wild pitch-plus-error to give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead.  The Kernels loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the game.

Of note:  J. D. Willilams was 0-for-4.  Tanner Vavra was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a run.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4.  Ivory Thomas was 0-for-2 with a walk.

PEORIA 5, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Joel Licon was 2-for-3 with a run.

PItching star:  Todd Van Steensel struck out five in four shutout innings of relief, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Steve Bean was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Steven Sabatino struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk.

The game:  A single, a walk, two more singles, an error, and another single plated five runs for Peoria before anyone was retired in the first inning.  That was all the Chiefs needed.  Cedar Rapids scored all of their runs in the third.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with none out.  J. D. Williams singled in one and a one-out double by Christensen brought home two.  The tying run was in scoring position, but a strikeout and a popup ended the inning.  The Kernels loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and had men on first and third with two out in the seventh, but did not dent the plate again.

Of note:  Williams was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4.  Ivory Thomas was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  He now has 24 walks in 63 plate appearances.  He is 7-for-38, giving him a slash line of .184/.492/.263.  Starter Derrick Penilla settled down to strike out five in three innings but his line is five runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk.
