May 20, 2014: Whoops

I needed sleep last night in preparation for a long night tonight, but fell down some internet rabbit holes and am posting this two hours into what should be sleep.

    1. The only thing I could think about while reading that was this:

      httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0YdqFPbSpc

      1. I saw a Smirnoff's ad with Adam Scott in it yesterday. I just kept waiting, but he never asked, "Are we having fun yet?"

        1. I saw that on repeat when I was trying to watch highlights on MLB.com. Even after, like, thirty loops he still doesn't say it.

  1. I am close, but not completely back on US time. More directly, I am exhausted and can't stay awake past about 8PM, which is perfect for those days, like today, when I have to get up at 3.

      1. What I saw of it was very charming. Unfortunately, I had very little time in Prague itself. Most of my waking hours there were in our facilities, which are not in Prague. I hope that the next time I get over there, I have more than a couple of hours to see the city.

        1. Sounds like my trip to London ten years ago. What I saw was great, but I saw most of it from inside cars and conference rooms.

          1. I'm pretty pumped that I have three days off and all by myself when I got to the UK in a couple weeks. I won't have to suffer the same fate as you guys.

  2. Programming note: I will be out of town from late this morning until tomorrow evening, so there will be no Minor Details tomorrow.

  3. Mrs. Hayes and I are taking a trip to Nags Head, NC, in the near future with some friends. We've caravanning out and back and have stops planned in Cincinnati (William Howard Taft birthplace!) and Norfolk (USS Wisconsin!) on the way out. While we're out in OBX we're going to visit Kitty Hawk and Roanoke, probably do some sea kayaking. If anyone's been out in the area and and has food recommendations or recommends other sites of interest, I'm all ears.

        1. Huh. I thought I'd posted a response, but it seems to have disappeared. Anywho, here's my buddy's review:

NC BBQ TOUR SUMMARY! Last week's tour with [academic ne'er-do-well progeny] was a resounding success. 10 places in total, with sampling of both eastern and Lexington (western?) styles.

We had methodological concerns ex ante, but they turned out to be moot as the dependent variable was very well behaved. (For you laymen: every place had chopped pork sandwich or plate, and some places basically had only that, making comparison very easy.)

The top tier: Skylight Inn, Wilbur's, Bunn's, and Lexington BBQ, probably in that order.

Next tier: Backcountry BBQ, Parker's, King's, Little Richard's, Shaw's. I'd say in about that order.

Bringing up the rear was The Pit, but hard to compare as our main fare was ribs, which turned out to be unusual in NC. Also, to our disappointment the fried pork skin sandwich we had at Lexington BBQ was not ubiquitous for it was a delightful part of a magical animal.

In addition to alarming amount of pork, we met or saw a number of real backcountry characters, many of whom are probably at home now with their cousin-spouses talking about some real cityfied characters they met who couldn't tell the difference between a snout and a tail, or a bag of ribs and a sack of ribs.

So, if the friend is in the eastern part, I'd recommend Skylight Inn, Wilber's, and Bunn's. If more central, Lexington BBQ and Backcountry.

[me:] I know he is going to Nag's Head. Don't know where else.

Bunn's would be the closest for sure. Tell him to be sure to get his bbq as a sandwich on cornbread. Skylight and WIlbur's are a bit further inland. Another place near those two is B's, which we didn't visit but which gets raves.

          1. The site was offline for about ten minutes while I wrestled with MariaDB. I emerged victorious.

    1. I have to say this really bothers me. There wasn't really any new news yesterday and I realize that people like Taylor say crap all the time, but the idea that Love couldn't have been appreciated elsewhere is beyond the pale.

I am feeling today for the first time that maybe I can extricate myself from following this club unconditionally.

        1. Probably no team. I would probably just be a fan of the league and its players. I'm already that with the exception of my hatred for the Knicks. As I've mentioned fairly recently, I've even softened my dislike for Kobe.

          1. Splash Brothers, dude. If they can just keep Bogut healthy, they are a title threat. And so fun to watch. I don't expect the transition to Kerr as coach will be too damaging to their style of play or success on the floor.

            1. Steve Kerr likes to shoot the 3.

I missed out on the news that Kerr went to GSW. Apparently, he wasn't interested in coaching that turdpile of a roster in NYC. Can't say I blame him. When his new club swindles K-Love from the Wolves, they will be really good.

              1. 5 years, "up to" $25 million.

Yea, David Lee is a good player. But he's not K-Lub.

  4. Ch: when you get to Seattle be sure to check out ebbets field flannel's store front. I purchased a sweet New Orleans pelicans hat. Beautiful store.

    1. Ooh, I have always loved that Pelicans hat. I have thought about buying one for years. It's the royal blue and white one, right?

      1. You won't regret it, Pirate. For the same price as a scratchy New Era made in ??? you get a beautiful wool & satin cap (with cotton or leather (!) sweatband) sewn in the US. You could actually watch them sew caps and shirts in the old store, and I can't imagine they took that away when they moved.

I have not regretted a single purchase I've made from Ebbets.

    2. I haven't been to their new(ish?) location, but I made sure to stop by when we were there in '09. I'm going to try to get back this year, though that place is dangerous to the wallet.* They do such great work.

Did they still have the friendly old office dog?

      * I've got a 1950s Millers cap, a 1930s Saints away jersey, a 1950s Habana Leones cap, and a 1930s Habana Leones cap. Plus 5 t-shirts. Mrs. Hayes even has two Ebbets Field Flannels tees.

  5. I've been slacking off -- here, give this one a try:

ID the AU -- which Twins player (current or former) consistently if not legibly writes his name this way?
    AU

      1. I read that today. Still don't regret my decision to eliminate the NFL from my life.

        1. Unfortunately, the NFL will continue to draw its talent from a pool of young players developed at public universities funded by our tax & tuition dollars.

  6. Kohl Stewart with another good outing. 6 IP, 1 R, 1 BB, but just 3 Ks. For a player with a big-time arm, his Ks have been disappointing, but he must have a lot of movement because batters are hitting under .200 against him for his career (60 2/3 IP). He has a career WHIP of 0.91 and a GO/AO ratio of about 1.4, which is excellent.

  7. I bring it up because of the Shield fans around here: Michael Jace (Detective Lowe) is being charged in the fatal shooting of his wife.

    1. After winning the draft lottery, a team essentially needs to get lucky three times over in order to have a storybook ending. First, it has to draft the right player. Next, it has to convince him to stay in town. Finally, he has to play up to his new contract. The odds are that something will go wrong. In 1997, the San Antonio Spurs chose Tim Duncan at No. 1 and went on to win four NBA titles with him on the roster. None of the teams to make the first overall pick since has won a championship.

      1. F*ck Cleveland.

(On a lighter note, the WGOM building from Stick's old basement just turned up in the header. That takes me back.)

        1. Seriously. I jokingly sent an email this afternoon to a co worker saying Cleveland would get it again because of how bad they f*cked up that pick last year. I should have laid some money down.

  8. Three out of four years. Cleveland! The fix is in!

I'm just stunned it wasn't Phoenix.

  9. I'm paying fair-weather fan attention to the Eastern Conference finals. I'm of course rooting for my Pacers, but damn if I don't love me some Birdman.
