Minor Details: Games of May 20

Fine pitching all around.  Enough offense three times out of four.  Pedro Florimon got two hits!

TOLEDO 3, ROCHESTER 0

Batting star:  Pedro Florimon was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  Scott Diamond pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks with six strikeouts.  A. J. Achter struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Mike Hessman was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his eleventh.  Drew VerHagen pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

The game:  Hessman hit a two-run homer in the first.  Ben Guez doubled and scored in the fifth.  And that was it.  Rochester's only threat came in the fifth, when a one-out single by Florimon and a two-out single by Doug Bernier put men on first and third.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-3.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4.  Josh Willingham was 0-for-4.

NEW BRITAIN 7, RICHMOND 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Tony Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  Daniel Ortiz was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Corey Wimberly was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Sean Gilmartin struck out nine in eight innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks.  Lester Oliveros pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Angel Villalona was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Austin Fleet pitched four innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  Doubles by Thomas and Ortiz highlighted a three-run first that put New Britain ahead 3-0.  Richmond got both of its runs in the second, when Mario Lisson singled, Villalona doubled, and a pair of productive outs cut the lead to 3-2.  Ortiz doubled in a run in the third to make it 4-2.  The Rock Cats took control of the game in the fifth, when two walks and a Kennys Vargas single led to two runs and a 6-2 advantage.  The Flying Squirrels got only one hit after the second inning.

Of note:  Nate Hanson was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Vargas was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-4 with a run.

FORT MYERS 7, DUNEDIN 2 IN DUNEDIN

Batting stars:  Niko Goodrum was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Stuart Turner was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.

Pitching stars:  Matt Tomshaw pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Madison Boer struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Derrick Chung was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Dalton Pompey was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Justin Jackson struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing a walk.

The game:  It was 1-1 after three, but Fort Myers took control with a four-run fourth.  Goodrum tripled in two and scored on an Adam Brett Walker II single.  John Murphy later singled in a run to make it 5-1.  Dunedin got one back in the fourth, but a two-run Turner homer in the sixth made it 7-2 and the Blue Jays never threatened to get back into the game.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Walker II was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3 with a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, BELOIT 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Bryan Santy was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Ivory Thomas was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Carlos Avila was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition star:  Lou Trivino pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  A two-out walk was followed by two singles to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead in the second.  Beloit tied it in the fourth and each team scored once in the seventh, leaving the score 2-2.  With one out in the eighth, Bo Altobelli singled, Santy doubled, and an intentional walk loaded the bases.  J. D. Williams then delivered a two-run single to give the Kernels a 4-2 lead.  In the ninth the Snappers put men on first and second with one out and moved them to second and third with two out, but did not score.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 0-for-5.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.
