The new recruits hadn't arrived in Rochester, but that was no problem for the Red Wings. The Rock Cats are blanked. A Kernel comeback falls short.
ROCHESTER 10, SYRACUSE 5 IN ROCHESTER
Batting stars: Doug Bernier was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two. Deibinson Romero was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one. Chris Rahl was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his second) and two runs.
Pitching star: Trevor May pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Steven Souza, Jr. was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his fifth) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two. Destin Hood was 2-for-5 with two homers, his third and fourth. Ex-Twin Brock Peterson was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
The game: This game was basically decided in the fourth inning. It was tied 1-1 after three. Two singles and an error gave Rochester a 2-1 lead. Bernier singled in a run and Rahl hit a two-run homer to make it 5-1. Surprisingly, the rally continued, as a walk and two singles produced another run and Romero doubled in the sixth run of the inning to make it 7-1. It was a bunch of fence posts after that, as the Red Wings scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh and Syracuse scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth.
Of note: Eric Farris was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one. Brad Nelson was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice.
BINGHAMTON 5, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN BINGHAMTON
Batting stars: Corey Wimberly was 1-for-4 with a double. Brad Boyer was 1-for-2 with a walk.
PItching star: Virgil Vasquez pitched six innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Dustin Lawley was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth. Kevin Plawecki was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Darin Gorski pitched a complete game, giving up two hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
The game: Two errors in the first gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead. Lawley hit a two-run homer in the fourth. That was way more runs than the Mets needed. The only time New Britain had anything resembling a threat was in the first, when Wimberly led off with a double. He never moved past second, as a strikeout, a fly out, and a ground out ended the inning.
Of note: Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4. Matt Koch was 0-for-3. Daniel Ortiz was 0-for-3.
FORT MYERS
No game scheduled.
BELOIT 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN BELOIT
Batting stars: Mitch Garver was 2-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and two runs. Bryan Haar was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his eighth. Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his third.
Pitching stars: Chris Mazza struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a walk. Alex Muren pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.
Opposition stars: Tyler Marincov was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring twice and driving in two. B. A. Vollmuth was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Kyle Finnegan pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
The game: Beloit tried to put it away early. In the third, a single, a walk, a single, and a sacrifice fly preceded a three-run homer by B. J. Boyd to give the Snappers a 4-0 lead. Haar hit a two-run homer in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2, but Beloit got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-ouw walk, a double, and a single to go in front 6-2. It stayed 6-2 until the eighth, when Christensen hit a two-run homer and Garver hit a solo shot to cut the lead to 6-5. There was still only one out in the inning when Haar singled, but that was the end of the line for Cedar Rapids, as their final five batters went out to end the game.
Of note: Ryan Walker was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run. Jason Kanzler was 0-for-4. Starter Kohl Stewart lasted only 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and four walks. He did have three strikeouts.
