Minor Details: Games of June 11

Sam Fuld appears ready.  Another solid game for Jose Berrios.  Who needs hits to score runs?

NEW BRITAIN 8, READING 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Brandon Waring was 2-for-3 with a walk and two home runs (his fourth and fifth), scoring three times.  Sam Fuld was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Tony Thomas was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Jim Fuller pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits with one strikeout.  Cole Johnson struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Aaron Altherr was 3-for-5 with a triple and a home run (his fourth), scoring twice.  Edgar Duran was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Mike Nesseth pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout.

The game:  Carlos Alonso singled in a run in the third to give Reading a 1-0 lead.  New Britain responded with five in the fourth.  They got the runs on just one hit, benefiting from an error and five walks.  The hit was a two-run single by Kennys Vargas that capped the rally.  Reading cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a triple and three singles.  The teams traded runs in the fifth.  Altherr homered in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-5, but in the ninth, a Waring homer was followed by three singles to give the Rock Cats a three-run advantage.

Of note:  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.  Nate Hanson was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Vargas was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Starter Sean Gilmartin struck out six in five innings, giving up four runs on eleven hits and no walks.

FORT MYERS 7, CHARLOTTE 6 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Mike Gonzales was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his sixth), driving in three.  Stuart Turner was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, his third.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.  Steven Gruver struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Maxx Tissenbaum was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Tyler Goeddel was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Kevin Brandt struck out four in two perfect innings.

The game:  Turner hit a two-run homer in the second to give Fort Myers a 2-0 lead.  Tissenbaum hit a two-run homer in the fourth to tie it up, but Gonzales hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put the MIracle in front 4-2.  Fort Myers scored three in the eighth without a hit, getting five walks and a ground out to go up 7-2.  They needed every one of those runs, because Charlotte scored four in the ninth.  The Miracle made two errors in the inning and Goeddel delivered a two-run single.  The tying run was on second with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, QUAD CITIES 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-4 with a home run, his sixth.  Mitch Garver was 3-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Starter Fernando Romero pitched four innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Brandon Bixler pitched three shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Chase McDonald was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Evan Grills struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks.

The game:  Kanzler homered in the second to give Cedar Rapids a 2-1 lead.  The score stayed 2-1 until the eighth, when the Kernels scored three runs.  They opened the inning with two singles, Christensen tripled them both home, and a wild pitch made it 5-1.  They needed all three, because Quad Cities got three of their own in the ninth.  Austin Elkins singled in two and Brett Phillips singled in one to make it 5-4 with the tying run at second with two out.  A fly out ended the game.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Todd Van Steensel retired the only man he faced to get the save.

DSL DIAMONDBACKS 11, DSL TWINS 9 AT DIAMONDBACKS

Batting stars:  Emmanuel Morel was 3-for-6 with two runs and an RBI.  Francisco Hernandez was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching star:  Argenis Silva pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Francis Martinez was 2-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Gerson Jimenez was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Didimo Bracho was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer.

The game:  Morel had an RBI single and came around to score on an error and a wild pitch to give the Twins a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  The Diamondbacks got a two-run double by Jimenez and a two-run single by Ramon Hernandez on their way to a five-run bottom of the third to go ahead 5-2.  Four walks, a sacrifice fly, and Bracho's two-run homer made it 9-2 in the sixth and a two-run error made it 11-2 after seven.  The Twins tried to get back into it with a seven-run ninth.  Three singles and an error made it 11-5.  A walk, a single, catcher's interference, and a hit batsman made it 11-6, an error made it 11-7, and a Roni Tapia single made it 11-9.  The tying run was on base with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-5.  Robert Molina was 1-for-5 with a run.  Starter Jadison Jimenez pitched four innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
