  1. That was a beatdown. I was not particularly surprised that San Antonio won, but I was surprised that they blew Miami out in three consecutive games. That was awesome.

      1. As much as I enjoy a dig at the Heatles now and then, the LeBron quitting meme has zero traction. James has nothing to be ashamed of regarding these Finals. The Spurs were a buzzsaw that might've beaten any champion from the last 50 years. Now, Wade and Bosh on the other hand...

  2. This was actually a pretty good quote from Chris Bosh:

“They exposed us, you know. They picked us apart. They made us question what we were doing and we were always behind the whole time. They played faster, they played stronger, they played tougher and they played like they wanted it more and they played with more pain.”

  3. If you follow me on Facebook you would have seen that over the weekend I went hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail and went 18 miles in 8 hours on Friday.

I was a little worried about taking on 18 miles but I wasn't camping out so I just had a little 5-pound backpack and knew that I would be sleeping in a regular bed that night. Still I averaged 2.25 miles an hour which is pretty good given that the SHT is rocky and root-strewn and has a lot of up and down to it. I could have easily gone another couple of miles. I was really happy with my results. It was an absolutely beautiful day with perfect conditions for hiking. I went a whole 6 hours without a break and only stopped briefly only a couple of times to time my shoes or look at the map.

The unfortunate thing is that I was going to do another 16-mile hike on Saturday but it was really stormy and cold (45 degrees). Since I hiked two days in the rain last year I wasn't in the mood to do that again so I bailed. I felt good Saturday (a little sore in the knees) and am confident that I could have done it had the weather had cooperated. That's the downside of not camping out. If I had been in a tent, I would have had no choice but to tough it out and hike to my destination. Oh well.

The other downside is that if I had completed that 16 mile hike then I would have completed a portion of the Superior Hiking Trail from Temperance River to a little north of Grand Marais. I've done other portions either hiking or snowshoeing, but that would have been the longest continious section I completed. My goal is to eventually hike/snowshoe the entire Superior Hiking Trail so it would have been nice to complete that section so I could concentrate on the areas closer to Two Harbors/Silver Bay. Now I'll have go back and complete that 16 mile section some day.

    1. I saw that post, free. It looked like a gorgeous day for being out of doors, but especially for being up north. Looking at the photos I was more than a little jealous. Too bad about Saturday's weather, but that can't take away from Friday.

Mrs. Hayes has expressed interest in trying out some snowshoeing on the lakes here next winter. Of course, she said that after winter was over, so we'll see what she says when I remind her of that in November.

    2. A good quality pair of hiking boots is pretty high up on my list of outdoors equipment. Recommendations?

      1. Vasque makes hiking good quality shoes/boots. Unless you are doing heaving duty hiking in mountianous terrain, I would maybe suggest hiking shoes over hiking boots. They typically more light weight and cheaper to boot (sorry). Of course they probably won't last as long, but if you are doing trail hiking like at state parks and such, hiking shoes will work just fine. I would go to an outfitter however like REI, Gander Mountain, etc and not buy them on-line. You definitely want them to fit right. REI would also steer you in the right direction boot/shoe wise based on what you want to use them for.

        1. I'm a big REI fan, and one's within riding distance. Not to far from here is the Hill Country, so I probably don't need anything to heavy duty.

        2. I wore Vasque Clarion IIs both times hiking through Philmont. Grey with blue nylon.
The first time I started using them as my camp shoes as well. I really liked them.
I then used them as my regular shoes after hiking in them.

    1. I got four- I thought I had good guesses on at least two of the others, but I guess not.

            1. Then I was right -- did not see those two. 'Course I got two others that I hadn't seen though, too

Let me know if you need help with any of the others

              1. I missed 1, 4, 6 and 7. If you can spoiler those for me, that'd be awesome!

I have a feeling I should have known at least two of those, but I just couldn't come up with anything.

                    1. What's left? #5 and #8?

                    2. Then I got both of those right too. Perhaps I typed one wrong. We'll just call it 6/8.

                  1. Ah- I haven't seen any of those. Would have been tough for me to get them, I guess.

    3. I very much enjoyed this. We should make this a thing. I could do it on my own, but the community aspect was nice.

      1. I check it every Monday; mostly I might get a couple or three, but since I got so close I decided to share it here and finish it off. Glad you like it -- they post a new one (almost) every Monday morning.

    1. I had no idea you were one of those Novak's. I went to Epiphany growing up and spent quite a few hours with various members of your family. I have been and will continue to pray for you, your sister, and your family.

        1. I spent a lot of time in youth group with your mom as one of the leaders. Now that I actually have to think of your sibling's names, I can't, of course... I graduated high school in '03, though.

    1. White Sox are the closest, followed by the . . . Yanquis? (ducks nearly decade-old "Yanqs aren't wearing black" debate).

  4. Much of the Sioux Falls-Sioux City area has had between 5-6" of rain in the last two days. I hope it stops soon, or south along the Missouri river is going to be seeing some serious flooding- again.

    1. Sioux City was under a tornado warning earlier this evening, although it seems not to have materialized. The town of Pilger, Nebraska, however, received significant damage. As far as I know, all the folks in my former congregation in North Sioux are okay.

  5. Just to reiterate:

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Now get back to it, cuz there's work to be done.
