Minor Details: Games of July 11

Another good game for Brett Lee.  Walkoffs for Fort Myers and Cedar Rapids.  Elizabethton and the GCL Twins get blown out.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 5, ROCHESTER 1 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE

Batting stars:  Doug Bernier was 2-for-4 with a triple.  James Beresford was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Ibarra struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and one walk.  Michael Tonkin struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Jose Pirela was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Austin Romine was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Jairo Heredia struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks.

The game:  Taylor Dugas doubled in a run in the second, putting S/W-B up 1-0.  Pinto singled in a run in the third to tie it up.  That was as good as it got for Rochester.  Romine delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the third to give the RailRiders a 3-1. lead.  In the fourth Pirela doubled in a one and Robert Refsnyder singled in another to make it 5-1.  The Red Wings put two on in the sixth and loaded the bases with none out in the seventh but did not score again.

Of note:  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-5.  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-4.  Starter Mark Hamburger struck out five in four innings but gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks.

READING 5, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting star:  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double, scoring twice.

Pitching star:  Adrian Salcedo retired all seven batters he faced, three by strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Carlos Alonso was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Kelly Dugan was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Aaron Altherr was 2-for-5 with a double and a run.

The game:  It looked good for a while.  Doubles by Aaron Hicks and Reynaldo Rodriguez put New Britain up 1-0 in the first and Rosario doubled and scored on a Lance Ray single in the third to put the Rock Cats up 2-0.  An error led to two Reading runs in the fourth and a sacrifice fly gave the Fightin Phils a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.  Rosario homered in the bottom of the fifth to tie it up at three, but Alonso singled in a run in the sixth to give Reading a 4-3 advantage and they added an insurance run in the ninth.  After the Rosario homer, the next twelve New Britain batters were retired.  They did put men on first and second with one out in the ninth, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.

Of note:  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-5.  Hicks was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Starter Pat Dean pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on ten hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 2, DUNEDIN 1 IN FORT MYERS

Batting star:  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Brett Lee struck out eight in 6.2 innings, giving an unearned run on five hits and a walk.  Alex Wimmers struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Tyler Jones pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Kendall Graveman pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Marcus Knecht was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth when Mejia singled in a run to give Fort Myers a 1-0 lead.  In the seventh, Knecht doubled and scored on an error to tie it at one.  It stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth.  Niko Goodrum led off the inning with a walk and took second on a wild pitch.  He advanced to third on a fly to center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dalton Hicks to win the game.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-4.  Hicks was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, CLINTON 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 3-for-6 with three RBIs.  Jon Murphy was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jose Flores pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Chantz Mack was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Zack Shank was 2-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and a double, scoring twice.

The game:  Mack singled in a run in the first but Zack Granite answered in the bottom of the first with a triple, scoring on a sacrifice fly.  Mack tripled in a run in the third to make it 2-1, which is where the score stayed until the eighth, when Shank homered to make it 3-1.  Swim delivered an RBI single in the eighth to cut the lead to 3-2 and Christensen had an RBI single with two out in the ninth to tie it at three.  Jeff Zimmerman's run-scoring single gave Clinton a 4-3 lead in the top of the eleventh.  In the bottom of the eleventh, a single and an error put men on second and third and Christensen singled them both home to win the game for Cedar Rapids.

Of note:  Granite was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-5 with a double.  Starter Kohl Stewart pitched four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

KINGSPORT 12, ELIZABETHTON 0 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-4.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Pedro Perez was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Jean Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Eudor Garcia was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.

The game:  Garcia had an RBI double and Perez a run-scoring single in the first to give Kingsport a 2-0 lead.  There was no more scoring until the sixth, when Ivan Wilson singled in a run to make it 3-0.  The Mets took control with a three-run seventh and put the game away with a six-run ninth.  Elizabethton had chances early, putting men on second and third in the first, loading the bases with none out in the third, and putting men on first and third in the fourth, but they went 0-for-10 with men in scoring position.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 0-for-3.  Max Murphy was 0-for-1 with a walk and two hit-by-pitches.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-4.  Jorge Fernandez was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Felix Jorge pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

GCL RED SOX 17, GCL TWINS 0 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Nelson Molina was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching star:  Eduardo Del Rosario retired all five men he faced, two by strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Joseph  Monge was 2-for-3 with a grand slam (his second) homer and three walks, scoring three times and driving in five.  Ben Moore was 2-for-4 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jordon Austin was 2-for-5 with a walk and four runs.

The game:  The Red Sox scored one on one hit in the second and two on no hits in the third to take a 3-0 lead.  They took control of the game with a ten-run fifth.  The Red Sox had four singles and a double and took advantage of three errors, a walk, and a hit batsman before Monge's grand slam finally killed the rally.  The Twins only once put a man on third.

Of note:  Dubal Baez was 1-for-4.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-2.  Rainis Silva was 0-for-2.  Starter Zach Tillery pitched 2.1 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

DSL TWINS 10, DSL REDS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 4-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jorge Parra was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Robener Cabrera struck out five in four innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and three walks.  Moises Gomez struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.  Argenis Silva struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Leandro Santana was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Dario Saunders was 0-for-1 with three walks.

The game:  Two errors led to two first-inning runs for the Reds.  The Twins came back with four in the third, getting an RBI double from Palacios and run-scoring singles by Tovar and Junior Amarante.  An error let in two Twins runs in the fifth to make it 6-2.  The Reds got one in the sixth but never got closer.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-5.  Jorge Andrade was 0-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Amarante was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Starter Luis Hernandez pitched two innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
