Minor Details: Games of July 16

A big day for Byron Buxton, the first he's had since coming back from the DL.  Alex Swim continues to hit.  Adam Brett Walker II hits his twentieth.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE 7, PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE 3 IN DURHAM

Twin:  A. J. Achter faced two batters and gave up hits to both of them, getting charged with one run.

PCL:  Joc Pederson was 1-for-2 with a walk and a home run.  Chris Taylor was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

IL:  Felix Perez was 2-for-2 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Liam Hendriks started and struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

The game:  The IL scored two in each of the first two innings and took a 7-1 lead with three in the sixth.

EASTERN LEAGUE WEST 5, EASTERN LEAGUE EAST 2

Twins:  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.  Tony Thomas was 0-for-1.  Taylor Rogers pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Cole Johnson retired both men he faced.

East:  Derrik Gibson was 2-for-3 with a home run and a triple, scoring twice.

West:  Steven Moya was 1-for-4 with a grand slam.

The game:  Moya hit the grand slam in the fifth, breaking a 1-1 tie.

FORT MYERS 5, DAYTONA 1 IN DAYTONA

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton had his first good day since coming back from injury, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-5 with a home run, his twentieth.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Matt Tomshaw pitched eight innings, giving up one run on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Madison Boer pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Billy McKinney was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Tyler Bremer struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

The game:  Buxton tripled in a run in the third to put Fort Myers up 1-0.  The Miracle went on to score a single run in each of the third through sixth innings, with Walker II homering in the fourth, Jorge Polanco doubling in a run in the fifth, and Stuart Turner singling one home in the sixth.  McKinney doubled and scored in the seventh for the lone Daytona run.  Hicks doubled in a run in the ninth.

Of note:  Polanco was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Danny Santana was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 10, LAKE COUNTY 4 IN LAKE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his ninth), scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jake Reed pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Brian Ruiz was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Carlos Melo struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  A two-run single by J. D. Williams capped a four-run first for Cedar Rapids, an inning in which the Kernels were aided by two errors.  A Kanzler two-run homer was part of a three-run third that made the score 7-0 and put the game out of reach early.   Lake County never got closer than six runs after that.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-5 with a run.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Starter Chih-Wei Hu pitched five shutout innings, but his final line reads six innings, four runs, six hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.

PRINCETON 3, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN PRINCETON

Batting stars:  Will Hurt was 2-for-3.  Max Murphy was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Sam Gibbons struck out six in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks.  John Curtiss struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Thomas Milone was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Manny Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Brent Honeywell struck out five in three perfect innings.

The game:  Elizabethton scored first, getting a fourth-inning run on a Jorge Fernandez single, but the Twins left the bases loaded.  Back-to-back doubles by Sanchez and Carter Burgess tied the score in the fifth.  In the seventh, Milone hit a two-run homer to give Princeton a 3-1 lead.  Elizabethton got the tying run on base with two out in the eighth but that was as close as they would come.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a run.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-4.  Fernandez was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

GCL TWINS 2, GCL RAYS 0 AT TWINS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Zack Larson was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Brandon Easton pitched four innings, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.  Eduardo Del Rosario pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Jose Alvarado struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.

The game:  There were no baserunners on either side until the fourth, when Nelson Molina drew a one-out walk, stole second, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a Larson single.  The Twins got an insurance run in the sixth on two singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.  The Rays got only three singles and did not advance a man past second base.

Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-2 with an RBI.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-3 with a double.

GCL RAYS 11, GCL TWINS 4 AT RAYS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS--TWINS DESIGNATED HOME TEAM)

Batting stars:  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-4 with a home run (his second) and three RBIs.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching star:  Zach Hayden struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Jose Rojas was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, driving in four.  Matt Reida was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Cade Gotta was 1-for-3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in one.

The game:  Two errors on the same play led to two Rays runs in the top of the first.  The Twins got one in the bottom of the first and each team scored once in the third, leaving the Rays ahead 3-2.  The Rays then took control with six runs in the fourth.  Jeremy Hadley hit a two-run homer, an error brought home one, and Rojas hit a three-run homer.  Minier hit a two-run homer in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-4, but the Rays got two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Dubal Baez was 0-for-3.  Starter Miguel Gonzalez struck out five in three innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL DIAMONDBACKS 4 AT DIAMONDBACKS

Batting stars:  Junior Amarante was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-3 with two walks.

Pitching star:  Randolph Perez struck out five in four innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Ramon Hernandez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Didimo Bracho was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Emilio Vargas pitched five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  A throwing error gave the Twins a 1-0 lead in the second.  Ramon Hernandez tied it at one in the fourth with an RBI single.  It was tied at two after six.  In the seventh, Arraez brought home two with a single-plus-error to give the Twins a 4-2 advantage.  Frangel Feliciano's RBI single cut it to 4-3 after seven, but in the eighth Roni Tapia doubled in one and Amarante singled in another to make it 6-3.  Bracho doubled and scored in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 6-4 and the Rays got the tying run up to bat with two out, but the last four Rays were retired.

Of note:  Antonio Tovar was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-5.
