NORFOLK 7, ROCHESTER 4 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second), scoring twice and driving in two.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in one.  Pedro Florimon was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching star:  Aaron Thompson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk

Opposition stars:  Xavier Paul was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer (his twelfth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Cord Phelps was 1-for-1 with three walks. scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Beresford homered in the top of the first to give Rochester a 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the first Paul followed two walks with a three-run homer to put Norfolk up 3-1.  The Red Wings tied it in the third when a Romero RBI double was followed by two walks and a wild pitch.  It stayed 3-3 until the sixth, when a single and three walks put the Tides in front and a double play brought home an insurance run.  Rochester cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the seventh, but Norfolk got the run back in the bottom of the seventh and got one more in the eighth.  The Red Wings did not get a hit after the fourth inning.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Yohan Pino struck out six in five innings, giving up five runs on three hits and seven walks

READING 4, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN READING

Batting star:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching star:  Jim Fuller struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Chris Bootcheck pitched six innings, allowing one run on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.  Brock Stassi was 1-for-3 with a home run (his eighth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Kelly Dugan was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Peter Lavin homered in the first and Logan Moore had an RBI single in the second to put Reading ahead 2-0 after two.  New Britain got on the board in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.  It stayed 2-1 until the sixth, when Dugan doubled and scored.  Stassi added a home run in the eighth to close out the scoring.  The Rock Cats had only two hits, a single by Kyle Knudson in the third and a single by Hicks leading off the ninth.

Of note:  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-4.  Starter Virgil Vasquez pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 7, DAYTONA 5 IN DAYTONA

Batting stars:  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in one.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 with a home run, his second.  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Brian Gilbert struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Steven Gruver struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Tyler Jones pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Dan Vogelbach was 2-for-3 with a home run (his ninth) and three RBIs.  Jordan Hankins was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

The game:  Daytona led 1-0 after one.  In the second, Goodrum doubled in one and Aderlin Mejia singled in another to put Fort Myers up 2-1.  The Cubs tied it in the bottom of the second and took a 4-2 lead after three when Vogelbach hit a two-run homer.  A pair of sacrifice flies tied it at four in the top of the fourth, but Daytona again went up in the bottom of the fourth when Willson Contreras tripled and scored.  In the fifth, Hicks hit a two-out double and scored on a pair of wild pitches to tie it at five.  Jorge Polanco tripled and scored in the seventh to put the Miracle ahead 6-5 and Buxton homered in the ninth to provide an insurance run.  After the fourth, the Cubs did not get a man past first until the ninth, when Hankins hit a two-out double.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-4 and is now 0-for-11 on his rehab assignment.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Starter Ethan Mildren pitched four innings, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, LAKE COUNTY 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart pitched five shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Jared Wilson pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Clint Frazier was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Dorssys Paulino was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

The game:  A two-run single by Alex Swim put Cedar Rapids up 2-0 in the first.  Vielma singled in a run in the fourth and Kanzler tripled and scored in the sixth to make it 4-0.  Lake County then mounted a comeback.  Claudio Bautista tripled and scored in the eighth to make it 4-1.  In the ninth, two walks, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Jorge Martinez made the score 4-3 with two out.  Ivan Castillo then singled to left and Martinez was thrown out trying to go from first to third to end the game.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Swim was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

PRINCETON 3, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN PRINCETON

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Max Murphy was 0-for-1 with three walks.

Pitching stars:  Matt Batts pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Josue Montanez struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one walk.

Opposition stars:  Greg Maisto pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  Hector Montes was 3-for-4 with a double.  Emmanuel Paulino was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Gordon singled in a run in the third and two walks and two wild pitches led to a run in the sixth to give Elizabethton a 2-0 lead.  Jose Paez singled in a run for Princeton as part of a two-run eighth that left the score tied 2-2.  In the ninth, two walks and a wild pitch put men on second and third for the Rays with none out.  The next two batters fanned, but Paulino singled in the winning run on a ground ball to shortstop.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-4.  Trey Vavra was 0-for-4.

GCL TWINS 6, GCL RAYS 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Amaurys Minier was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Dubal Baez was 2-for-2 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Starter Michael Theofanopolous struck out three in three innings, giving up two unearned runs on one hit and one walk.  Zach Tillery pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts.  Miles Nordgren pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Opposition star:  Mario Adames struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk.

The game:  Minier doubled in a run in a two-run second that gave the Twins a 2-0 lead.  A walk and an error allowed the Rays to score two in the third without a hit, tying the score.  In the bottom of the third, Baez had an RBI single to cap a two-run inning that put the Twins back up 4-2.  The Twins added single runs in the fifth and sixth.  The only Rays threat after that came in the seventh, when they put men on second and third with none out but failed to score.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI.  Ariel Montesino was 0-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-4.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

Batting stars:  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with two walks and an RBI.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jorge Andrade was 2-for-6 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Jadison Jimenez struck out six in six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.  Luis Hernandez pitched three innings, giving up one run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout.  Daulin Ramirez pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Miguel Bautista pitched four shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Robertico Medina was 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks, driving in two.

The game:  Medina hit a two-run triple in the second to give the Orioles1 a 2-0 lead.  The Twins took the lead in the fifth, scoring three times on a walk, a hit batsman, two singles, another walk, and a passed ball.  It stayed 3-2 until the eighth, when a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.  With two out in the eleventh, singles by Arraez, Antonio Tovar, and Diaz produced the go-ahead run.

Of note:  Tovar was 1-for-6.  Junior Amarante was used as a pinch-hitter and was 0-for-1.
