Minor Details: Games of July 19

An excellent game for Jose Berrios.  Trevor May eases back from the disabled list.  New Britain gets swept.

NORFOLK 4, ROCHESTER 2 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Chris Rahl was 2-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Trevor May struck out three in three innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.  Mark Hamburger pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk.  Deolis Guerra struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Christian Walker was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Quintin Berry was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

The game:  A sacrifice fly put Norfolk up 1-0 in the first.  It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when the Tides turned in a three-run inning.  One run scored on a bases-loaded walk and the other two on a Walker single.  Both Rochester runs came in the eighth on a Beresford two-out two-run double.  The Red Wings did not get the tying run on base.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 0-for-4.  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Chris Herrmann was 0-for-2 with a walk.

READING 1, NEW BRITAIN 0 AT READING (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching star:  Jose Berrios pitched a complete game, going six innings and giving up one run on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Ryan O'Sullivan pitched six innings, allowing three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Albert Cartwright was 3-for-3 with a run.

The game:  The game's lone run came in the sixth when Cartwright singled, went to second on a hit batsman, and scored on a Wil Nieves single.  New Britain had three hits and only got one after the first inning.

Of note:  Tony Thomas was 1-for-3.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-2 with a walk.

READING 3, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN READING (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Brandon Waring was 2-for-2 with a home run, his ninth.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3 with a double.  Matt Koch was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched four innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Daniel Turpen struck out three in two innings, giving up an unearned run on two walks.

Opposition stars:  Aaron Altherr was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Kelly Dugan was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Carlos Alonso was 2-for-4.

The game:  Waring homered in the fourth to open the scoring, but Reading got the run right back in the bottom of the fourth on a Brock Stassi RBI single and went up 2-1 in the fifth on an error.  A bases-loaded walk tied the score in the sixth, but New Britain failed to take advantage of having the bases loaded with none out, losing the threat on a popup and a double play.  With two out in the seventh, two singles and a walk filled the bases and Jake Fox singled in the winning run.

Of note:  Tony Thomas was 0-for-4.  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-4.  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a run.

FORT MYERS 5, DAYTONA 3 IN DAYTONA

Batting stars:  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  Travis Harrison was 3-for-5 with two runs.  Max Kepler was 1-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale struck out seven in seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks.  Madison Boer struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two walks.

Opposition star:  Gioskar Amaya was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring once.

The game:  Kyle Schwarber singled to give Daytona a 1-0 lead after one.  Fort Myers took the lead in the fourth on RBI singles by Gonzales and Niko Goodrum and went up 4-1 in the fifth on a two-run Gonzales single.  The Cubs cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth.  Each team scored once in the seventh.  Daytona did not get a hit after the seventh innings.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-5 with a double.  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, FORT WAYNE 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-3 with a run.  Tanner Vavra was 0-for-0 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Hudson Boyd pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Nick Burdi struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jake Bauers was 1-for-4 with a home run, his seventh.  Nick Schulz was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Josh VanMeter was 2-for-4 with a double.

The game:  Bauers homered in the fourth to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead but Chad Christensen tripled and scored to tie it up in the bottom of the fourth.  Schulz homered in the fifth to make it 2-1 TinCaps.  Cedar Rapids tied it up in the sixth on an error and took a 4-2 lead later in the inning on RBI singles by Mitch Garver and Bryan Haar.  Trea Turner singled in a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3.  The tying run was on second, but a popup ended the inning.  Fort Wayne did not get a man past first after that.

Of note:  Christensen was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Garver was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Alex Swim was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Starter Lewis Thorpe struck out six in 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.

BURLINGTON AT ELIZABETHTON

Rained out.

GCL RED SOX 10, GCL TWINS 1 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching stars:  Zach Hayden struck out two in one inning, giving up an unearned run on no hits and no walks.  Seth Wagner pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Javier Rodriguez pitched five innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Derek Miller was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Rafael Devers was 2-for-5 with two runs.

The game:  Ryan Lavarnway singled in a run in the first to put the Red Sox up 1-0.  The Twins tied it in the second when Joel Polanco reached on an error, stole second, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a ground out.  It was all Red Sox after that.  Miller doubled in two in the fourth to make it 3-1.  They put the game out of reach in the sixth with a four-run rally that featured one single, three walks, a hit batsman, and a balk.  The Twins got only one hit after the fifth, a two-out single in the ninth.

Of note:  Dubal Baez was 0-for-2.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-3.  Rainis Silva was 0-for-3.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-3.  Starter Onesimo Hernandez struck out five in four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks.
