Minor Details: Games of July 20

Lots of offense for Rochester.  Aaron Hicks hits a grand slam.  Tim Shibuya keeps pitching well.

ROCHESTER 14, NORFOLK 2 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  Chris Rahl was 4-for-5 with three doubles, scoring three times and driving in three.  Nate Hanson was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second), a double, and a walk, driving in four.  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-5 with a grand slam (his fifth homer) and five RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Lester Oliveros retired all five men he faced, striking out two.  Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Steve Lombardozzi was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Christian Walker was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

The game:  Rahl doubled in two runs in the first to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.  Pedro Florimon homered in the second to make it 3-0.  Norfolk got an RBI double from Walker as part of a two-run third to cut the lead to 3-2, but from there is was all Red Wings.  Hanson singled in a run in the fourth, Eric Farris had an RBI double and Ortiz a run-scoring single in the fifth, Hanson hit a three-run homer in the seventh, and Rahl had an RBI single and Ortiz a grand slam in the eighth.  After the third, the Tides did not get a man past first base until the ninth.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-6 with a run.  Florimon was 1-for-2 with  a home run (his third) and three walks, scoring three times.

NEW BRITAIN 6, READING 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-5 with a grand slam, his third homer.  Tony Thomas was 1-for-4 with a home run (his seventh), scoring twice and driving in two.  Brandon Waring was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Mason Melotakis struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Jake Fox was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his tenth) and a walk.

The game:  Fox hit a two-run homer in the first to give Reading a 2-0 lead.  Brock Stassi's RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0.  New Britain did not get on the board until the seventh, but they did so with a bang.  A hit batsman, a double, and a walk loaded the bases with two out.  A catcher's interference call brought home a run to make it 3-1 and Hicks followed with a grand slam to put the Rock Cats up 5-3.  The Fightin Phils came back to tie the score in the eighth when Kelly Dugan delivered a two-run single.  The first two New Britain batters in the ninth were retired, but Thomas homered to give the Rock Cats the lead.  Reading went down in order in the ninth.

Of note:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run.

FORT MYERS 7, BREVARD COUNTY 4 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk, driving in four.  Stuart Turner was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Tim Shibuya pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Michael Reed was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his seventh.  Nathan Orf was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.

The game:  Fort Myers started the scoring in the third when Adam Brett Walker II hit a two-run double and Mike Gonzales followed with an RBI single to give the Miracle a 3-0 lead.  Mike Garza singled in a run for Brevard County in the fourth, but Goodrum hit a three-run homer in the sixth to make the score 6-1.  The Manatees didn't give up, though, getting a three-run homer from Reed in the eighth to cut the margin to 6-4.  They did not get the tying run on base, however, and Goodrum singled in a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final 7-4.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4.  Travis Harrison was 3-for-4 with a double.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with a run.  Walker II was 1-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a run.

FORT WAYNE 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting star:  J. D. Williams was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  Ryan Eades pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Alex Muren struck out two in two perfect innings.  Jared Wilson pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jeffery Enloe pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Eric Yardley struck out three in 2.2 innings, allowing a walk.  Ryan Butler pitched a perfect perfect inning, striking out all three batters he faced.

The game:  A walk, two singles, and a ground out gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead in the second and Trea Turner doubled and scored in the third to make it 2-0.  Cedar Rapids had only four hits, all singles.  The only time they got a man to second base was in the sixth, when they opened the inning with back-to-back singles.  A force out at third, a strikeout, and a ground out ended the inning.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-4.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.  Alex Swim was 1-for-3.

ELIZABETHTON 8, BURLINGTON 0 IN ELIZABETHTON (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Tyler Kuresa was 3-for-4 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and a double, driving in three.  Max Murphy was 1-for-2 with a home run (his eighth) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Brett Doe was 2-for-3 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Derrick Penilla pitched five innings, giving up two hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Samuel Clay struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Kuo Hua Lo pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  None.

The game:  Austin Diemer singled in a run in a two-run Elizabethton first.  In the third, Kuresa hit a two-run homer and Doe hit a solo shot to make the score 5-0.  Murphy homered in a two-run fourth to make it 7-0 and Kuresa homered again in the sixth to push the lead to 8-0.  The closest Burlington came to scoring was the third, when they led off with a single and a hit batsman.  A force at second put men on first and third with two out, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-2 with a catcher's interference, scoring once and driving in one.  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-3.

BURLINGTON 3, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN ELIZABETHTON (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Austin Diemer was 1-for-3 with a double.

Pitching stars:   John Curtiss struck out four in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Randy LeBlanc pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Foster Griffin pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.  Logan Moon was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Brandon Dulin was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.

The game:  Burlington got on in the first on a ground out, made it 2-0 in the third on Riley King's RBI single, and went up 3-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Xavier Fernandez.  Elizabethton did not get a hit until the third.  The lone Twins run came in the bottom of the fifth when Will Hurt walked, went to third on a Diemer double, and scored on a sacrifice fly.  Elizabethton put men on first and third with one out in the sixth and first and second with one out in the seventh, but could do nothing with them.

Of note:  Max Murphy was 1-for-4.  Trey Vavra was 0-for-2.  Starter Michael Cederoth pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

DSL NATIONAL LEAGUE 9, DSL AMERICAN LEAGUE 7 AT AMERICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-1 with a hit-by-pitch and a run.

National League:  Raul Siri was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.  Gerson Jimenez was 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run.

American League:  Rafelin Lorenzo was 2-for-2 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Trailing 7-5 after seven, the National League scored four runs on one hit in the eighth to take the win.

Of note:  It tells you what the DSL is like that, in the all-star game, there were six errors, eight walks, four hit batsmen, and six wild pitches.
