Minor Details: Games of August 1

A good day for Elizabethton pitchers.  A solid performance for Ethan Mildren.  A big day for Edgar Herrera in the DSL.

LEHIGH VALLEY 6, ROCHESTER 4 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Dan Rohlfing was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Ibarra pitched two perfect innings.  Aaron Thompson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Freddy Galvis was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Russ Canzler was 1-for-4 with a home run, his eighth.  Jim Murphy was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Galvis doubled in a run in the first to give Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead.  Rochester came back in the third with an RBI double by Beresford and a two-run single by Pinto to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.  It didn't last long, as the IronPigs scored four times in the fourth.  A Leandro Castro triple was followed by two singles and a walk, making it 3-2 with the bases loaded and none out.  A pair of ground outs scored two of the runs and a wild pitch plated a third, leaving Lehigh Valley up 5-3.  Canzler's homer in the fifth made it 6-3.  Rochester got one in the seventh but did not get the tying run on base.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 1-for-5.  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-4.  Pedro Florimon was 1-for-4.  Starter Kris Johnson pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

ERIE 9, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Matt Koch was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his second.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-3 with a run.

Pitching star:  Daniel Turpen struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Buck Farmer struck out six in six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.  Devon Travis was 3-for-5 with a home run (his eighth) and two RBIs.  Jason Krizan was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Dean Green was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  Erie scored two in the second on an error to go up 2-0.  Koch hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to tie it at two.  It was still 2-2 after five, but then the SeaWolves gradually took over.  Travis homered in the sixth to make it 3-2.  They added two in the seventh to make it 5-2.  Dixon Machado doubled in two in the eighth to make it 7-2, and Erie tacked on two more in the ninth.  The Koch homer in the second was the last hit New Britain had.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Mike Gonzales was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Adrian Salcedo pitched four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

LAKELAND 6, FORT MYERS 3 IN LAKELAND

Batting star:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Ethan Mildren pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Lance Durham was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Harold Castro was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Curt Powell was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Walker II singled in a run in the second to give Fort Myers a 1-0 lead.  Lakeland tied it in the fifth on Castro's RBI double.  Lakeland had a man on first with two out in the seventh when Powell doubled in one and Connor Harrell tripled in another to give the Flying Tigers a 3-1 lead.  It went to 6-1 in the eighth when Durham singled in two and Castro singled in one.  The Miracle got two in the ninth but never really threatened to get back into the game.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Levi Michael was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-4.  Jason Kanzler was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS AT BELOIT

The game was suspended in the top of the second.  There is no score and Cedar Rapids has a man on first with none out.  The game will be completed as part of a doubleheader today.

KINGSPORT 1, ELIZABETHTON 0 IN KINGSPORT (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Tyler Kuresa was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  John Curtiss pitched four innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  C. K. Irby struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Andrew Church pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Jean Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Luis Guillorme was 1-for-3 with a run.

The game:  Kingsport led off the game with two singles putting men on first and third.  A double play plated a run, and that was it for the scoring.  Elizabethton did not get a hit until the fourth.  That was the biggest threat the Twins had, as they put men on first and second with one out, but a double play ended the inning.  A leadoff single and a wild pitch put a man on second with none out in the seventh, but three infield grounders ended the game.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-3.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-3.  Tanner English was 1-for-3.  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-3.

ELIZABETHTON 3, KINGSPORT 1 IN KINGSPORT (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Alex Real was 1-for-3 with a run.  Pat Kelly was 1-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Michael Cederoth struck out seven in four innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.  Keaton Steele struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Wuilmer Becerra was 2-for-4 with a double.

The game:  Two singles and a passed ball plated a run for Elizabethton in the second.  Eudro Garcia singled in a run in the third to tie it up.  In the fifth, Blake Schmit singled in a run and another scored on a wild pitch to give the Twins a 3-1 lead.  Kingsport did not get the tying run on base after that.

Of note:  Austin Diemer was 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch.  Tyler Kuresa was 1-for-3.

GCL RED SOX 3, GCL TWINS 2 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Rainis Silva was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.  Frank Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Starter Josh Burris struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Leonel Zazueta struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and no walks.  Jhon Silva struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and no walks.

Opposition star:  Gabe Speier struck out five in four shutout innings of relief, giving up one hit.

The game:  In the first, Amaurys Minier singled in one and Silva doubled in another to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.  It stayed 2-0 until the fifth, when Ben Moore delivered a two-out two-run single to tie it up.  The score remained tied until the ninth, when Trenton Kemp led off with a double and scored on a single by Rafael Devers to end the game.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-3 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.  Zack Granite, on a rehab assignment, was 1-for-3 with a run.   Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Minier was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL WHITE SOX 3 AT WHITE SOX

Batting stars:  Roni Tapia was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Edgar Herrera was 4-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Jose Ramirez struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks.  Erick Balbuena struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.  Carlos Aponte pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Bradley Valdez was 0-for-1 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Droherlin Mejia was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

The game:  Palacios doubled in a run in a two-run first to give the Twins the early lead.  The White Sox got single runs in the first and second to tie it at two.  An error put the Twins ahead 3-2 in the third.  In the fourth, Tapia doubled in a run and later scored on a balk to make it 5-2.  Jorge Andrade had an RBI single in the fifth to make it 6-2.  The White Sox scored once in the eighth and had the bases loaded with two out but did not score.  They also put men on first and third with one out in the ninth, but a double play ended the game.

Of note:  Andrade was 2-for-5 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Junior Amarante was 0-for-2 with a walk.

    Assuming the breakout in 2012 is real, I would expect him to repeat it especially two years later. It is nonetheless nice to see him duplicate it as some proof that he might not be a flop. He was two years younger than the average batter in 2012 and is now almost average, but he's also only 24. I hope he gets more than a token amount of games in AAA this year.

    1. if he's got his act together at AA now, what is the point of not moving him up to AAA? Dude really, really needs to show he can perform at the higher level. It's about time to fish or cut bait. And it's not as though Eric Farris is a serious threat to become a MLB contributor.

      1. I agree, but in the Twins defense, he's really only been hot for a couple of weeks. I can see an argument for giving him a couple of weeks to solidify his numbers and gain more confidence before moving him up. It's not necessarily what I'd do, but I can see the argument.
