    1. My first thought after Mrs. Hayes told me Bacall passed away was "She was only 89?!" My second was the "We had it all/Just like Bogie and Bacall" chorus from this song. My third was, "Wow, she survived him by 57 years. At least now they'll get to be together again." It's a loss, but bittersweet because Bogie and Bacall are reunited.

  1. Made pesto last night. Ran out of pine nuts and oil for the amount of basil I had (my sister's garden when crazy this year). Looking forward to dinner tonight.

  2. Just in case anyone is interested, I've decided I'm a seller for fantasy baseball this year. I think we have until the 17th to make trades (at least, that's what it is in my other league).

    1. How might I propose that the keeper option be extended to mid-year pickups? I've jettisoned most of my draft picks, but have found some worthwhile contributors out on the free agent market. Ought not there be some reward for finding Devin Mesoraco and Zach Britton? My other catcher turned out to be a sissy.

      1. We've discussed that in the past. The problem comes in with the format where a person can be kept at the spot there were drafted. In that scenario, we didn't feel like it was fair to place free agent pick ups at the back end of the draft. We could do something like use the average draft position or the yahoo rankings to place them appropriately, or we could change our keeper system around, though I kind of hate to do that since it's worked pretty well so far.

In any event, any changes to the system would have to be applied in the off season, so they wouldn't be in effect for the players kept for next season. I am certainly open to looking into this, and hopefully this background helps you understand why we are where we are.

        1. That's about where I figured things stood, and playing by the league rules isn't a problem for me. I mostly propose it because I can't manage a useful depth of player knowledge at draft time to get the up-and-comers, and instead rely on good old-fashioned after-the-fact effort and some luck. I got lucky with a couple of adds and selfishly don't want to give up what I got.

  3. Clone Baseball.

The final Dee Gordon, abandoned on the mound by his disqualified teammates, pitched the final 3.1 innings and gave up 86 earned runs on 58 walks and 37 hits, for a total of 476 pitches.

    1. Buxton “was running at full speed after a line drive, and he sort of [dove] under [Kvasnicka] as they hit. It looked like he got hit in the neck by [Kvasnicka’s] knee and he just fell flat on his face and didn’t move,” said Matt Haskell, a resident of Wallingford, Conn., who witnessed the collision. “Everybody just ran out there — the catcher just sprinted out there, the training staffs from both teams. Neither one was moving.”

The crowd was silent as the players laid on the ground. “They were both going full-speed,” Haskell said. “This is 10 times worse than any collision I’ve ever seen.”

STrib has a photo from just after they collided.

  5. Saw Matilda at the Shubert tonight. excellent show.
