Minor Details: Games of August 18

The Pinto-Pino combination carries Rochester.  The DSL Twins sweep a doubleheader.  Who won for Cedar Rapids?  You know Hu.

ROCHESTER 6, SYRACUSE 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Yohan Pino pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.  Stephen Pryor struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Sandy Leon was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his fourth.  Eury Perez was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  There was no score through five.  In the sixth, James Beresford singled, Herrmann had an RBI double, and Chris Colabello and Deibinson Romero followed with RBI singles to give Rochester a 3-0 lead.  Pinto delivered a two-run single in the seventh to make it 5-0.  Leon hit a two-run homer in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-2, but Pedro Florimon got one of the runs back with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Of note:  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Beresford was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Colabello was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Florimon was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, QUAD CITIES 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  J. D. Williams was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu struck out eight in six innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and no walks.  Dallas Gallant struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  James Ramsey was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Brett Booth was 2-for-4.  Andrew Thurman struck out seven in six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks.

The game:  A two-out error was followed by an RBI double by Wade and an RBI triple by Williams to give Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead in the second.  Ramsey doubled in a run in the fifth, but the Kernels got it back on a Chad Christensen run-scoring single to make the score 3-1.  Ramsay again singled in a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2, but Cedar Rapids got the run back in the eighth on a Mitch Garver RBI double.  Quad Cities got a two-out hit in the ninth, but could do no more.

Of note:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Christensen was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Garver was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4.

PRINCETON 6, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Jeremias Pineda was 3-for-5 with two triples and two runs.  Brian Navarreto was 1-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  John Curtiss struck out seven in six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks.  Josh Burris struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Carter Burgess was 4-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Nick Ciuffo was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), scoring twice.  Patrick Grady was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  Elizabethton scored one in the first, Princeton tied it in the second, and the Twins went up 2-1 in the third.  Burgess delivered a two-out two-run single in the fourth to give the Rays their first lead at 3-2.  Navarreto tied it with a home run in the fifth.  In the seventh, Princeton went double, single, double, single to score three times and take a 6-3 lead.  Elizabethton got one back in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run up to bat, but the last seven Twins went out.

Of note:  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Tanner English was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.

GCL ORIOLES 3, GCL TWINS 1 AT ORIOLES

Batting stars:  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.  Dubal Baez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Tyree Davis was 0-for-1 with three walks.

Pitching stars:  Callan Pearce pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.  Jhon Silva struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three walks.

Opposition stars:  Brian Gonzalez struck out five in four shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks.  Derek Peterson was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs.  Ronarsy Ledesma was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Three singles produced an Orioles run in the first.  Peterson tripled in two in the third.  That was all the Orioles needed.  The Twins did nothing on offense for the first five innings.  They got a man to third with two out in the sixth, loaded the bases with two down in the seventh, and got a leadoff triple in the eighth, but were unable to score until the ninth, when they got four walks.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-5 with a double.  Starter Alexis Tapia struck out four in four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk.

DSL TWINS 4, DSL PADRES 3 AT PADRES (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Luis Martinez was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  Carlos Aponte struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Wilfri De La Cruz was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his second.  Derwin Pomare was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Westhers Magdaleno was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

The game:  Morel opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the third.  In the fourth, De La Cruz hit a two-run homer and Pomare had an RBI single later in the inning to put the Padres up 3-2.  The Twins tied it in the fifth on a Diaz RBI double.  In the sixth, the Twins got four singles, the fourth by Martinez to drive in the go-ahead run.  The Padres did not get a man past first base after that.

Of note:  Roni Tapia was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Starter Jose Martinez pitched four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

DSL TWINS 7, DSL PADRES 3 AT PADRES (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-3 with a home run (his fifth), a double, and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in three.  Jorge Parra was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Luis Martinez was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Randolph Perez pitched five innings, giving up three unearned runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Daulin Ramirez struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Leudy Molina was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Eduardo Solano struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  Three errors led to three Twins runs in the second.  In the third, Diaz doubled in one and one scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0.  The Padres got back into it in the fourth, getting a walk, two singles, and an error to score three times.  That was as close as they would come, though, and Diaz hit a two-run homer in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
