2014 Game 127: Barely 2nd WC Tigers visit Twins

Robbie Ray
v
Tommy Milone

Two castoffs face off tonight. The Tigers decided they had too many[1] starting pitchers and Fister was the worst[2] of the bunch. Off he went to the Nationals and the Tigers get a few not-that-good players back. He is only 22 though.

The A's traded for the rest of the good pitchers in the league and Milone was the odd man out. He got traded for his own teammate.

[1]: The Tigers learned the hard way you can never have too many.
[2]: Fister's rWAR would be third on the Tigers pitching staff.

  1. sean's mismatched bracketed numbers up there are bugging me a bit. I want to know where the matching [2] and [3] went.

    1. Sure, why not?

As much as I like Vargas and Arcia, it's nice to have a couple guys on the team who can hit and play defense.

  2. Poor Dick'n'Bert can't comprehend how Jim Johnson couldn't be an elite closer with his 101 saves with the O's.

  3. This last half inning has been the best TV I've seen lately. And I've been watching the Simpsons marathon!

  4. Mauer with his second PA this inning with the bases loaded. Maybe this time he'll hit it over the fence.

    1. Instead he doesn't swing the bat and gets another RBI. Hey, why not if the Tigers are walking everyone.

      1. Dazzle was quite snarky about Joe taking on 3-0 and 3-1. For a guy who likes to talk like he's all about the team, Dazzle is awfully me-first about RBIs and SBs.

        1. I listened to Dazzle get on Mauer last year due to his lack of RsBI. Atteboy in the booth politely suggested that might be because the Twins couldn't manage to get on base in front of him.

  5. DON'T SEND HIM!!
Because that kind of non-aggression is why the Twins' reputation around the league is so good?? Is anyone else listening to the radio broadcast at this point?

    1. Yep, I heard it. Evidently swinging away to get RBIs is better than drawing a walk, but somehow an inning or two later it's better for the team to not score on a base hit.
Dazzle should go back to talking about fishing in Japan.

  6. So we'll march day and night by the big cooling tower, they've got Cabrerra, but we've got Joe Mauer.

  7. I like how these position players' usual pitch is a fastball with some weird movement on it. It was certainly true of Cuddyer and Butters.

  8. A little odd how the Twins can score 20 runs and Tommy Milone STILL can't earn a win.

Boy, Suzuki sure didn't want any part of this game.

I'm glad this game wasn't wasted on an away crowd.

    1. To be kind of fair to Milone, Escobar was awful in the field that inning and Arcia had a foul ball catch taken away from him by a fan.
I mean, good pitchers find a way to work out of that but the defense kind of let him down.

        1. Does xFIP mean anything in a single-game size? Isn't it like most stats where you need a large enough sample to let it stabilize? I mean, sure, that low xFIP looks nice, but so does Eddie's 5 for 5 day, and I don't expect that to represent Escobar's true talent level.
