Minor Details: Games of August 24

A really good game for Pat Dean.  Adam Brett Walker II hits his XXVth.  A sweep for Elizabethton.

ROCHESTER 5, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 4 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Doug Bernier was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Eric Farris was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a home run, his eighth.

Pitching stars:  Lester Oliveros struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.  Aaron Thompson pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Zach Nuding pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Ramon Flores was 3-for-5 with two home runs (his sixth and seventh) and a double, driving in three.  Kyle Roller was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

The game:  Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped to the early lead, as Flores hit a two-run homer in the first and Roller hit an RBI double later in the inning to put the RailRiders up 3-0.  Ortiz homered in the second to cut the lead to 3-1.  There was no more scoring until the eighth, when Farris singled in one, Bernier doubled in two to give Rochester the lead, and James Beresford doubled in an insurance run.  The Red Wings needed the insurance, as Flores homered with two out in the ninth to reduce the margin to 5-4.  A popup ended the game.

Of note:  Beresford was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Pedro Florimon was 1-for-5.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a run.  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Starter Tyler Duffey pitched four innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

NEW BRITAIN 12, ALTOONA 0 IN ALTOONA

Batting stars:  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in four.  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Corey Wimberly was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Pat Dean pitched eight innings, giving up three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Cole Johnson pitched one inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Willy Garcia was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Keon Broxton was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  A wild pitch put New Britain on the board in the first.  The Rock Cats took control with four in the second, getting a two-run single from Gonzales.  It went to 8-0 in the fourth, as Gonzales knocked in two more with a double and Eddie Rosario had a run-scoring double.  In the sixth, Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a two-run homer, Knudson doubled in a run, and Jorge Polanco had an RBI single.  Altoona did not get a hit until the fifth and did not advance a man past first base.

Of note:  Nate Hanson was 0-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his twentieth.  Rosario was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

CHARLOTTE 5, FORT MYERS 2 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting star:  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-2 with a home run (his twenty-fifth) and two walks.

Pitching stars:  Todd Van Steensel pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Nick Burdi pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jared Mortenson struck out seven in seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk.  Johnny Field was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a hit-by-pitch, driving in one.  Tyler Goeddel was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

The game:  The teams traded runs for a while.  Charlotte got one in the first.  An error gave Fort Myers a run in the second.  Field doubled in a run in the third.  Walker II homered in the fourth.  Juniel Querecuto singled in a run in the bottom of the fourth.  But then the Miracle broke the string by not scoring, and when the Stone Crabs got two in the fifth they took control of the game.  Fort Myers did not get a hit after the fourth inning and only had two hits in the game.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-4.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Max Kepler was 0-for-4.

QUAD CITIES 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs.  J. D. Williams was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Thomas Lindauer was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer (his fifth), a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  A. J. Reed was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  J. D. Davis was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fourth.

The game:  Christensen delivered a bases-clearing double in the third to give Cedar Rapids a 3-0 lead.  Williams doubled and scored in the fourth to make it 4-0.  Quad Cities came back in the fifth, getting a Lindauer three-run homer to cut the lead to 4-3.  Lindauer doubled and scored on a Bobby Boyd single to tie the score in the seventh.  Logan Wade singled in the eighth to put the Kernels back in the lead at 5-4, but the River Bandits scored four times in the eighth to go ahead permanently.  Reed doubled in the tying run and Davis hit a three-run homer to put Cedar Rapids in front.  Cedar Rapids got one in the ninth and brought the tying run up to bat with two out, but that was as much as they could do.

Of note:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a run.  Starter Mat Batts pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

ELIZABETHTON 10, BRISTOL 4 IN BRISTOL (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Tyler Mautner was 2-for-3 with a home run (his fourth), a double, and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in three.  Nick Gordon was 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Dereck Rodriguez had a perfect perfect inning, striking out all three men he faced in the ninth.

Opposition stars:  Jerrick Suiter was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Carlos Ozuna was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Nick Buckner was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  Mautner opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second.  Each team scored once in the third.  Two doubles and a wild pitch led to two runs for Bristol in the fourth, tying the score.  Ozuna singled in a run in the fifth to give the Pirates their first lead of the game at 4-3.  It didn't last long.  In the sixth, Mautner doubled in a run and two more scored on an error to put Elizabethton up 6-4.  In the seventh, Gordon singled in a run and Jorge Fernandez hit a three-run double to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-4.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Fernandez was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Starter John Curtiss pitched four innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

ELIZABETHTON 1, BRISTOL 0 IN BRISTOL (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Trey Vavra was 1-for-1 with a walk a double, and a hit-by-pitch, driving in one.  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Randy LeBlanc struck out seven in five innings, giving up four hits and no walks.  C. K. Irby struck out five in two innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  John Sever struck out six in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.  Enyel Vallejo was 2-for-3.  Chris Harvey was 2-for-3.

The game:  The lone run scored in the third, when Pineda singled, stole second, and scored on a Vavra double.  Those were the only two hits Elizabethton had, but they were enough.  Bristol put men on first and second in the first and sixth, both times on two singles, but never advanced a man past second.

Of note:  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch.
