And as we start the game log, Trevor the Plouffe gives the Twins a 1-0 lead.
An Escobar sac fly puts the Twins up 2-0 in the second.
With that strikeout, Schafer is now 2 for his last 19 and is now under .300. Yeah, SSS and all, but I think that balloon may have popped.
Or not. Schafer puts some more air in the balloon with a two-run homer! 4-0 Twins!
Kris, I really don't think the Twins losing streak has much to do with their failure to steal many bases.
They would be winning more if they stole all the bases, though.
Well, at least they wouldn't be losing. The other team couldn't score if there were no bases.
Bremer: "I know there are fans out there that are looking for strikeouts instead of the 'pitch to contact' pitcher the Twins have had the last 10 or so years...."
you dont say.
What fans are really looking for is the kind of pitchers known as "good pitchers". The Twins haven't had many of those lately.
Schaffer!
must have been reading Jeff's post from earlier =p
If I'd known that was what it took, I'd have posted earlier.
Taking a break from some good German cuisine to shout, "Schafer!"
I guess Rick Anderson should've gone out there sooner.
Four strikeouts in a row for May!
Well, so much for that strikeout streak.
I can't wrap my head around the idea of a guy named "Nieto" hitting a home run.
At this point, I don't mind the Twins not saying what Santana's role will be next year. They do need to make a decision about it early in the off-season, though.
Assuming that's it, a decent performance by Mr. May. Not a super game, but a "quality start" and he's kept the Twins in the game. For now, we'll take it.
WHIP less than one, 10 strikeouts in 6 innings. No walks. He does that every game he's a Cy Young candidate
Well, not if he gives up three runs in those six innings every game. But I see what you mean.
May's xFIP for this game was 0.83. He allowed 5 baserunners and three of them scored. They bunched all their base runners for their runs. That's pretty rare. Plus, the home run bounced off the top of the wall. I think it was a very good start.
Liriano has had a game with 10+ Ks and 0 walks just once in his career and that wasn't until his 70th career start (so none in 2006).
Johan didn't get a 10K, 0BB walk until his 54th career start, his first of 3 in his first Cy Young season, including a 14K, 0BB walk game against the O's. He's done it nine times in his career. His best was a 17K, 0 BB game against the Rangers, which is the Twins' record for K's by a pitcher in a game. He had a 95 game score for that, which is insanely good for a non-complete game.
Blyleven didn't get a 10K, 0BB game until his 33rd career start. That was the only one he had in his first two seasons. (Sorry, but I won't go through his entire career game logs).
Suzuki with an RBI double!
Fien gets the eighth again. I'm nervous, but I don't know who I'd feel better about, either. We'll see how it goes.
Good inning for him. On to the ninth!
6-3 Twins!
A second chance for Perkins.
Good grief.
SIGGGGHHHH
One down, two to go.
Two down, one to go.
PUPPIES!!!!
I don't like this new "obligatory home run" Glen Perkins.
But yes, puppies!
That was a bandbox HR by a great hitter. slider below the knees and in off the plate and he lofted a fly ball that barely stayed fair and just went over the wall. I'm very glad that didn't tie it or win it because that would have been sickening.
It took two years for a Twins pitcher to get 10 strikeouts in a game, and now it's happened twice in a three game span. I like this trend.
Twins pitchers finally getting enough sink on the ball =p
