Mexican Matchups: Games of October 22

A good day for Corey Wimberly.  Navojoa loses two leads but still wins the game.  Mexicali heaps praise on Urias.

OBREGON 5, MAZATLAN 5 IN MAZATLAN (10 INNINGS)

Twins:  Corey Wimberly was 2-for-5 for Obregon.

Obregon:  Donald Lutz (Cincinnati) was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second), two doubles, and a walk.  Nicolas Garcia was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Irwin Delgado struck out eight in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks.

Mazatlan:  Roman Pena was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer.  Jesus Castillo was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Jose Contreras pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Pena hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give Mazatlan a 5-2 lead, but Garcia's RBI single and a two-run homer by Jose Augusto Figueroa (Yankees) tied it in the ninth.  The game was apparently called a tie after ten innings.

NAVOJOA 5, JALISCO 4 IN NAVOJOA

Jalisco:  Jose Manuel Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Jesus Lopez was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Carlos Vazquez pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Navojoa:  Luis Fonseca was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Jose Guadalupe Chavez was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice.  Hugo Gutierrez pitched a perfect inning.

The game:  Navojoa had leads of 3-1 and 4-3, but it was tied at four after seven.  Fernando Flores singled in what turned out to be the winning run in the eighth.

MEXICALI 9, CULIACAN 8 IN MEXICALI (10 INNINGS)

Culiacan:  Sergio Gastelum was 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs.  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  Robert Coello (Baltimore) struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Mexicali:  Xorge Carrillo (Mets) was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Victor Mendoza was 1-for-1 with a three-run homer. Edgar Gomez (Tampa Bay) pitched a perfect inning.

The game:  Mendoza hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to give Mexicali an 8-7 lead, but a single and three walks tied it at eight after nine.  Ramon Urias homered with one out in the tenth to win the game.

HERMOSILLO 5, LOS MOCHIS 0 IN LOS MOCHIS

Hermosillo:  Yunesky Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Edgar Quintero was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk.  James Gillheeney (Seattle) pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Los Mochis:  Juan Carlos Gamboa was 2-for-4.  Brian Burgamy (Mets) was 2-for-4.  Oswaldo Pacheco pitched a scoreless inning, allowing only a walk.

The game:  Quintero's two-run homer in the sixth made it 3-0.  Los Mochis had seven hits but stranded all seven men.
