  1. Our h.s. conference decided to schedule the annual cross-town rivalry football game between the two high schools for Halloween. A game that often involves shenanigans on and off the field anyway. Seems like a good idea. (our school, the host this year, asked to have the game moved to Saturday, allegedly, but was denied)

the Mrs and I plan to stay home, and are hoping for rain so that pep band will be canceled.

  2. I understand that you have doubts about Maddon. I understand that you might not think it could possibly work. But you don't even call him?

    1. I don't blame them for not calling. They don't want to be publicly rejected.

I am sure they inquired under the radar and were rejected.

      1. Dear Joe Maddon,

We were recently made aware that you are no longer employed by the Tampa Bay Rays. You may be aware of the managerial vacancy we currently have in Minnesota, and that we no longer play in a horrible indoor stadium, which you may consider a pleasant change from your prior workplace. We would be interested in talking to you about the position.

Do you like us? Please check:

Thank you on behalf of the entire Minnesota Twins Organization.

  3. I am just plowing through Zealot. I haven't even had it for 12 waking hours and I'm already more than 50% done. Since I have absolutely nothing to do today until 7pm, I'll probably end up finishing it sometime this afternoon and be able to contribute to CH's post next week.

  4. Paging cheaptoy (and others I am sure) - your wish is granted.

“And so what happens is you make a decision as an organization to go in a direction. Now we have six players with two or less years’ experience. You either have to be committed to that or not.”

    Sounds like fun.

    1. WOOO! The best news, other than Barea being gone, is that Budinger doesn't have to be traded now since they need some outside shooting. Since this wish worked, I'm going to put together a new wish list for the other things I want.

      1. the most disturbing part of that story is the "still climbing a steep learning curve" part for LaVine. I worry that he might be a smaller, slighter version of the Kings' Ben McLemore. In the latter's case, it's still too early to call him a "bust," but he has bust-like tendencies.

        1. The idea of Lavine as a third PG, from all I've heard about his preseason, does make me nervous. But I get over that by realizing Ricky gets the fourth now.

        2. I think he is not in the immediately plans to play the point unless a game is out of hand. If injuries arise, we can pick a point guard up off the trash heap that makes me feel just as confident as having Barea on the roster.

  5. I don't know if anyone else here is Greek or Greek-by-marriage, but if so, Happy Oxi Day.

    1. There were no bear-selfies in that article. I wanted to judge for myself how dangerous the situations were.
Bear cub in background, 50 feet away: no prob.
Bear cub at left, momma bear at right, not behind but besides: prob.

      1. I know! I almost didn't share it here for that reason, but I figured Jeff A would still appreciate the bear photos. I want to know whether the writer of the article doesn't understand what a selfie is or if there's some other reason they didn't include any selfies (say, because showing them would only encourage more people to take them).

        1. I did appreciate them. And you can understand why people want to take selfies with bears because, as you point out, bears are cool.

  6. Wait . . . has this place always had ligatures that appear automatically? Let me see here . . .

    Huh.

    1. I don't remember when it happened, maybe last time the font changed?
      I haven't really tested it.

      1. Oh, it's in Firefox, but not Chrome.
        I see it at work.

I could test it in IE but... no.
I could test it in Safari, but I handed the iPad back to EAR.

    2. I could not place the word 'ligature' based on the context of your LTE so I had to look it up. Should have guessed based on your avatar.

        1. I remembered that, I just couldn't recall what 'ligature' meant in a discussion about typography - my brain kept circling back to this or this.

  7. So...last night Wild lose a game up 3-0 in the third. Tonight they win a game down 3-1 in the third.

One thing about this team so far this year...lots of goals. Good to see. Now if they can just do anything on the power play.

    1. yeah, if last night was a bad loss, tonight was a good win.

I just hope this not scoring goals on the power play is a short term thing and not a season long issue

      1. I really wish icing wasn't allowed. So...you're penalized for doing something illegal, and you get rewarded by being able to do something normally illegal?

      2. No team* in the history of the NHL has gone 0-for-the-season on the PP. League average over the past 5 years is ~18% which is about where the Wild have been between 2009-13. Even the worst units during that span are scoring 10-13% of the time. In addition, they've only had 26 power plays thus far, <10% of their average total opportunities per season since 2009. It'll even out.
On the flip side, they're scoring lots of goals (top 5 in the Conference with no PP goals!) and lead the Conference in goal differential at +13...another instance of SSS, but a really fun development thus far.

        *Unverified, but confident assertion
