November 1, 2014: Molly

After we heard rumors yesterday that it was Doogie,
Now Gleeman says that Reusse confirms it's Molly.
Although I don't know if it's a bad choice, I'm disappointed.

We could've been somebody
We could've been somebody

      1. whatevs.

Dougie probably needs some managing experience at a higher level (AA or AAA) or bench-coaching experience at the Major League level before he gets his shot.

      1. Cool Headline at SI:
Cubs bringing in Joe Maddon, firing Edgar Renteria raises questions
I can understand the Cubs firing Edgar, what is inexplicable is that the waited a full season in which he never even showed up.

    1. I wonder how much the Friday night had to do with it. The last houses we hit gave us tons and we returned the favor to our last treaters.
Were there parties? Did parents figure that since it was a weekend night they could hit "The Best Neighborhoods"?
MN was also very cold last night. The pond froze over for the first time since spring.

      1. We got a ton of rain (for us) during the day, and scattered showers in the evening. That held down the numbers a lot. We shut down by 7:15 and were in bed asleep by 8:30.

    2. We had lots of left over candy. There might have been 30 trick or treaters total. It was certainly cold and windy, so I dont blame parents if they didnt want to send their kids out for a long time.

      1. It sucked pretty hard here. 30's and windy. The trinket managed the whole neighborhood, but the bauble got cold and angry, so I had to break out halfway through and get him home.

  1. I could use a little help from y'all. A close friend just came home after a week in the hospital, and she's in rather rough shape physically and mentally at the moment. She's not even really up for visitors right now. I'd like to come up with some stuff that might cheer her up and take her mind off everything. I'm thinking movies, tv shows (available on DVD), podcasts, comedy specials, online cartoons, ridiculous gifs . . . anything that is really, seriously funny. Obviously humor is subjective, but I'm thinking stuff that's really escapist and ridiculous would be good.

    1. EAR and I have been watching "Jeeves and Wooster" (British Series on A&E DVD) starring Hugh and Laurie.
Not ridiculous laugh-out-loud funny, but without any real darkness to it, and the stories are good and I want to keep going on episodes.
The light side of British aristocracy in interwar period is a nice change from the soap opera in the same setting of "Dowton Abbey"
I guess it could offend Communists and Fascists.

    2. Hmm... Out of the box - Go to your local Indian grocery store and get DVDs for Lagaan (A. Khan) or Chakde India (S. Khan).

Other Aamir Khan favorites: 3 Idiots, Dhobi Ghat, Fanaa. Don't get Ghajini for now.

(oh yeah - you have to watch with English subtitles turned on)

  2. I dont mind that Molitor was hired. Any of the three candidates would have been ok with me. I just think people who think that Molitor is going to be a Gardy clone are in for a big surprise.

    1. Right, but with yesterday's rumors, I let myself get excited that it was M16 and now it's not, so now I'm disappointed more than if Minty had never been seriously considered.
And it's not about them making the right decision, it's just about guys I'd like to see for me reliving my favorite days as a Twins fan.
The only guys I know I'd prefer over Doogie Baseball are LeCroy and Redmond. Maybe Thome.

        1. Good, but then I've gotta start cheering for Molly to struggle or something.
I'll be over this soon enough.

        1. No, I'm just talking about potential guys I would prefer over Mientkiewicz for the same reasons I prefer him over Molly.

  3. Arsenal on an adrenaline-high in the closing moments of today's 3-0 spanking of Burnley. Man.

    1. I was very, very bummed to not be able to go to the match. Then I had to work while it was on, so I couldn't even watch it live. Thank goodness for the NBC Live Extra app, I can at least watch the replay.

  4. Molly might have been offered the job in Midseason 2013.

There was a faction within the Twins’ power structure that wanted to install Molitor as manager in July 2013, the person said, but Molitor, then working as a minor-league infield and baserunning coordinator, turned down the opportunity to replace Ron Gardenhire at that time.

“He’s very aware of who he is and what he represents,” the person said. “He’s not going to do anything that’s not proper and right and just. There’s a dignity about him. He’s going to go in as the guy and not as somebody’s replacement.”

On one hand, I like this, because no way did I want Gardy out then.
On the other hand, don't we want our team's manager to be the one who goes for the win?

    1. On the other hand, don't we want our team's manager to be the one who goes for the win?

Yes. That's why he waited until this year. Last year's team couldn't be considered winning.

    2. He's perfectly set up now. The '13 overachieved its run differential and the '14 team underachieved. The '14 team was more than 100 runs better in differential than '13, but the record didn't show it. If it did, Gardy would still be the manager and might have gotten votes for Manager of the Year since that would have meant going from 95 losses to 85 losses or less. Now it won't take much for this team to improve its record and Molitor will look like a good manager.

  5. No. 1 Gophers men hockey outshot St. Cloud 35-14 and had to win it in OT. In hockey, fans figure that's bad luck or great goaltending (probably both). In baseball, if you outhit someone 15-5 or something like that and have to win it in extra innings, fans believe you can't hit in the clutch.

    1. "They need to bury their chances."

"They are squeezing their sticks too hard."

"This team doesn't have a pure scorer."

Plenty of parallels to the not clutch criticism in hockey.
