CAROLINA 9, MAYAGUEZ 2 IN CAROLINA
Twins: Daniel Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Mayaguez. Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3 for Mayaguez. Dereck Rodriguez pitched two innings for Mayaguez, giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout.
Mayaguez: Andrew Velazquez (Arizona) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs. Luis Collaza struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
Carolina: Ozzie Martinez (Atlanta) was 3-for-5 with a home run (his second) and a double, scoring twice and driving in two. Enrique Hernandez (Miami) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one. Giancarlo Alvarado (Mets) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The game: Carolina scored five in the first and the margin was never less than four after that. Rene Garcia (Houston) had a two-run double in the inning.
CAGUAS 14, SAN JUAN 3 IN SAN JUAN
Caguas: Luis Mateo was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two. Edgardo Baez was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one. Javier Machuca pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
San Juan: Jon Garcia (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his second. Jonathan Mota (Cubs) was 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Reiner Roibal pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
The game: Caguas trailed 3-2 after six but scored three in the seventh, five in the eighth, and four in the ninth. Ramon Castro doubled in the tying run and Mateo doubled in the go-ahead run.
