Mexican Matchups: Games of November 11

Errors play a big part for Mexicali and Mazatlan.  Los Mochis wins a close game.  Heras harasses Hermosillo.

MEXICALI 4, OBREGON 2 IN MEXICALI

Obregon:  Donald Lutz (Cincinnati) was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Arturo Lopez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Mexicali:  Gil Velazquez was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Walter Ibarra (Arizona) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Marco Antonio Duarte pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Mexicali scored two in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie.  The go-ahead run scored on a squeeze bunt and a single-plus-error by Velazquez brought home an insurance run.

MAZATLAN 5, NAVOJOA 2 IN NAVOJOA

Mazatlan:  Jesus Castillo was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Heber Gomez was 1-for-1 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Amilcar Gaxiola pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Navojoa:  Jose Guadalupe Chavez was 2-for-5 with a run.  Rolando Acosta was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Luis De La O pitched two shutout innings, allowing four hits.

The game:  Navojoa led 2-0 after three, but Mazatlan scored four in the fifth and one in the sixth.  The four-run inning came with just one hit, aided by two walks and an error.

LOS MOCHIS 6, CULIACAN 3 IN CULIACAN

Los Mochis:  Sandy Madera was 1-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a walk, scoring twice.  Brian Burgamy (Mets) was 0-for-1 with four walks and a run.  Julian Arballo (Yankees) retired all five men he faced.

Culiacan:  Issmael Salas was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Maxwell Leon was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Rodrigo Lopez pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Los Mochis led all the way, but it was 1-0 after two, 3-2 after five, and 4-3 after eight.  Juan Carlos Gamboa hit a two-run double in the ninth to give Los Mochis a more comfortable lead.

JALISCO 11, HERMOSILLO 2 IN HERMOSILLO

Jalisco:  Leo Heras (Houston) was 3-for-5 with three home runs (his fifth, sixth, and seventh) and a walk, driving in five.  Marquez Smith (Cincinnati) was 1-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Graham Godfrey (Arizona) pitched six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Hermosillo:  Sebastian Elizalde (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Jesus Loya (Boston) was 2-for-4.

The game:  Smith led off the fifth with a homer to break a 1-1 tie and put Jalisco in the lead to stay.  They went on to lead 5-2 after six, then Heras hit a three-run homer in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
