Friday Music Day: 1-23

Did anyone have any idea of best three-track sequence on an album? I didn't, but maybe I will. Sean Paul still has my official entry, but I reserve the right to fix that. Otherwise, it's time for your random ten.

*1. I alternate between finding Zooey charming and annoying.
*7. I wish I had seen a Drive By Truckers show when Shonna was still with them.
*10. Though this is not the version on the Unplugged album, it is still very likely I will listen to that album today now.

February 13 at the Turf Club is a Tired Eyes/Lou Barlow show. Tired Eyes is the 70's-era Neil Young Cover Band with members from Low and Old Yeller. I already have tix and may have 1 or 2 available based on whether a couple of friends can get away from the house the night before Valentines day. So I would encourage anyone to go and if you are interested let me know and I might have a ticket available. They were only $12 with the fees.

    1. I saw Old Yeller at the Cabooze on Johnny Cash night last weekend. Assuming the lead singer is part of Tired Eyes, he's got the Neil Young look down.

        1. That was my first live experience with a too-impaired-to-perform performer. The lead singer for the second to the last act forgot lyrics, played the wrong songs, and told the same anecdote three times. Thankfully they stopped after about four songs.

  3. Pink Floyd -- Happiest Days of Our Lives, Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2), Mother -- (The Wall)
Dredg -- RR, Yatahaze, 90 Hour Sleep -- (Leitmotif)
Rage Against the Machine -- People of the Sun, Bulls on Parade, Vietnow -- (Evil Empire)
Sleigh Bells -- Kids, Riot Rhythm, Infinity Guitars -- (Treats)
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead -- It Was There That I Saw You, Another Morning Stoner, Baudelaire -- (Source Tags and Codes)
The Hives -- B is for Brutus, See Through Head, Diabolic Scheme -- (Tyrannosaurus Hives)
Nine Inch Nails -- March of the Pigs, Closer, Ruiner -- (The Downward Spiral)
Deftones -- You've Seen the Butcher, Beauty School, Prince -- (Diamond Eyes)
Deftones -- Passenger, Change (In the House of Flies), Pink Maggit -- (White Pony)
Tool -- Undertow, 4 Degrees, Flood -- (Undertow)
Tool -- Schism, Parabol, Parabola -- (Lateralus)
Tool -- Wings For Marie, 10,000 Days, The Pot -- (10,000 Days)
    Tool -- Stinkfist, Eulogy, H. -- (AEnima)

    I like Tool.

    * Cropped - T++ - Wireless
    * You Don't Understand Me - The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
    * Antidote - The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives
    * No One's There - KoRn - Untouchables
    * The Twistinside - Everclear - Sparkle and Fade
    * Hypodermic - The Offspring - Ignition
    * Gary's Got a Boner - The Replacements - Let it Be
    * plyPhon - Autechre - Quaristice
    * Lost - Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II
    * Indecision Time - Husker Du - Zen Arcade

        1. That song is better, but you still may be overrating.
"Big Man With a Gun" "A Warm Place" "Eraser" is good, if unfulfilling as it's the end of part 1 and start of part 2.

best 3 out of 4 song sequence on an album
One thing at a time, buster. That said, "Big Man" through the end of the album, skipping "Reptile" (which could be removed from the album, but then part 2 is really just a coda).
Or the start "Mr. Self Destruct" - "Piggy" - [skip "Heresy"] - "March of the Pigs"?
I've never felt the album needed trimming, but if one wanted to tighten it up, I'd suggest cutting "Heresy", "Ruiner", "Becoming", and "Reptile". "I Do Not Want This" isn't great, but really essential to the progression towards "Big Man".

  4. Hmmm, best three song runs?

    Iron Maiden
The Number of the Beast has two candidates:
    Invaders-Children of the Damned-The Prisoner
22 Acacia Avenue-The Number of the Beast-Run to the Hills

Powerslave also has a tough one to beat:
Back in the Village-Powerslave-Rime of the Ancient Mariner

    Black Sabbath
    Heaven and Hell
Children of the Sea-Lady Evil-Heaven and Hell (Lady Evil is ok, and almost brings this trio down a bit. But hot damn, those two songs surrounding it elevate things.)

    Dark Tranquillity
The ending of Fiction gets me every time:
    Misery's Crown-Focus Shift-The Mundane and the Magic

    Death
Now that I think about it, this might be the best three songs in music history, off of Symbolic:
    Crystal Mountain-Misanthrope-Perennial Quest

    Megadeth
    From Rust in Peace
    Holy Wars...The Punishment Due-Hangar 18-Take No Prisoners

    Metallica
Man, remember when these guys were really, really good? From Ride the Lightning
Fight Fire with Fire-Ride the Lightning-For Whom the Bell Tolls

    01. Opeth - "Windowpane", Damnation
    02. Epica - "Design Your Universe", Design Your Universe
    03. Tristania - "Evenfall", Widows Weeds
    04. Metallica - "Blackened", ...And Justice for All
    05. Blind Guardian - "The Eldar", Nightfall in Middle Earth
    06. Celtic Frost - "One In Their Pride", Into the Pandemonium
    07. Amon Amarth - "Prediction of Warfare", With Oden on Our Side
    08. Hammerfall - "A Legend Reborn", Renegade
    09. Running Wild - "Mordor", Branded and Exiled
    10. Iced Earth - "Desert Rain", Night of the Stormrider

      1. I did check them out. I thought I had left a response afterwards. I'll check them out again to refresh my memory.

    *Notes:
    1. "Now in '95 I will survive as a man on my own" This album turns 20. Well, now I'm old. I had the cassette single (with "remixes" that were barely any different) for this because I couldn't wait until I found the CD single and I needed to hear the songs (b-side was "Drop") now. I listened to it over and over and over. The album didn't live up to the single, but man is this great. They barely got the album out in '95, but the single was out in late summer, so Fatlip's plans for how to live in 1995 weren't so late, he could have acted on them. Also, I saw the Pharcyde open up for Cypress Hill at Roy Wilkins within the year (with 311!). Worst merch table ever. I would have bought a $30 Tee, but all they had (left?) was sweatshirts (not hooded) in pink with baby blue printing and baby blue with pastel yellow printing. Doubleyu Tee Ef. (I could find the date of the show if I knew how to locate my only driving offense: speeding in St. Peter on 169 on the drive home.)
    3. Still free!
    a. "Peter, Peter, Peter."
    5. Dub version of "This Love"
    b. I told my kids they sound like a dial-up modem before realizing how dated that reference is. Well, now I really am old. Upon reflection, that was such a dominant sound for such a small window of time.
    d. Album by John Feith, full title "Who Cooks for Poor Sam Peabody?": Bird Song Ear Training Guide. The Magnolia is described as "Sweeter, sweeter, sweetest"; Mourning is "Cheery, cheery, cheery, to meetcha".
    7. Fortuitously numbered. "I can't get laid 'cause everyone is dead."
    8. CD that came with the book of the same name, not exactly a book on CD, as it's more demostration. I really haven't put it to use yet.
    T. The first six or seven times I saw them, they opened with this song.

  6. One really good Three-song run, before I get working...
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - "Sheep", "Grand Dark Feeling of Emptiness", "Rich Wife Full of Happiness" (Ease Down the Road)

        1. Oh, I thought you were considering those three as well. I remember thinking right after I got the album that those were really good, maybe my favorite three, right in a row. The transitions between them and thoughts within them make them fit together just right.

    1. More:
Coil "Teenage Lightning" "The Snow" "Windowpane" from Love's Secret Domain
Ice Cube "The Predator" "It Was a Good Day" "We Had to Tear this M-----f----- Up" from The Predator
Ha Ha Tonka "The Horse in Motion" "Walking on the Devil's Backbone" "Close Every Valve to Your Bleeding Heart" from Novel Sounds from the Nouveau South
Lydia Loveless, opening 3 or closing 3 of Indestructible Machine
The Orb "S.A.L.T." "Toxygene" ["Log of Deadwood" is just a transition] "Secrets" from Orblivion
Lauryn Hill "Lost Ones" "Ex Factor" "To Zion" from Miseducation

I'll disqualify the last 3 on Black Dice's Beaches & Canyons because that's like 45 minutes and could be an album without the first two tracks. And the 3 that make up John Coltrane's A Love Supreme

  7. I haven't done one of these in forever.

    1. “Reggaejunkiejew” – WeenPure Guava
    2. “Dose Of Thunder” – The ReplacementsTim
    3. “Boreal” – Hundred WatersHundred Waters
    4. “X-Ray Man” – Liz PhairWhip-Smart
    5. “Identity” – X-Ray SpexGerm Free Adolescents
    6. “Thanks A Lot” – Neko CaseThe Virginian
    7. “Strandbar” – Todd TerjeIt’s Album Time
    8. “Boogie With Stu” – Led ZepplinPhysical Graffiti
    9. “Candyfloss” – WilcoSummerteeth
    10. “Now That I’m Older” – Sufjan StevensThe Age Of Adz

I recently bumped up to the 128GB iFruit which has allowed me to once again carry a vast chunk of library in my pocket, something I haven't had for at least 1.5 years or so (the old, smaller capacity phone was on strict austerity measures with high turnover). I once again have access to a lot of my old music, and I find that, yup, I hate all of it.

  8. 1. Brown Eyed Girl (alternative take)--Van Morrison--Bang Masters
    2. One Bass Hit, No. 2--Dizzy Gillespie--Ken Burns Jazz
    3. World At Large--Modest Mouse--Good News For People Who Love Bad News
    4. Ice Miner--Leo Kottke--Instrumentals: the Best of the Capitol Years
    5. Streets Of London--Ralph McTell--Troubadours of Folk: The 60s Acoustic Explosion
    6. I'm Just Wild About Harry--Sidney Bechet--Pre-War Classic Sides
    7. Oxford Comma--Vampire Weekend--Vampire Weekend

    9. Slow Ride--Foghat--Fool For The City
    10. Cecilia--Simon & Garfunkel--Bridge Over Troubled Water

        1. I grew up on a farm in a rural community full of Germans. I doubt there are that many cuss words I don't know.

          1. It doesn't mean I expected you to like listening to them in your music, at four words in at that.

            1. I make an attempt to at least keep up a little bit with what's going on in popular culture. I am not claiming to be hip or anything, but if I'm going to relate to people I need to know at least a little about what's current.

  9. As for 3 song sequences:
Live's Throwing Copper leads off with The Dam At Otter Creek - Selling the Drama - I Alone
Dave Matthews Band's Crash has #41 - Say Goodbye - Drive In Drive Out

I need to look at more albums.

    1. When I looked though, I tried to avoid opening and closing sequences (but failed: Lydia Loveless, Lauryn Hill (minus intro)).
Not sure if Live should be allowed despite that.

  10. I'm pretty sure my favorite three track run is from Pink by Boris. "Pink" -> "Woman on the Screen" -> "Nothing Special"

I was absolutely losing my mind the first time I listened to that album.

    1. Ooh, good call.

"Pink" is one of those songs that makes any three song sequence great.

BTW, I haven't sent those books yet. My wife said she would do it, but didn't, and now I have to rescue them from her car. They are headed your way eventually, I swear it.

  11. Too many to choose from but these jumped out first:

    from Springsteen's Born to Run

    Thunder Road
    Tenth Avenue Freeze Out
    Night

or his The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle

    Incident on 57th Street
    Rosalita
    New York City Serenade

Could probably come up with several more from Neil Young, but I'll go with After the Gold Rush

    Tell Me Why
    After the Goldrush
Only Love Can Break Your Heart

    Nick Drake Five Leaves Left

    Way to Blue
    Day is Done
    Cello Song

    Richard Buckner from Since

    Ariel Ramirez
    Jewelbomb
    Ocean Cliff Clearing

Cat Power could have multiple here, too, but I went with the last 3 songs on Moon Pix

    The Colors and the Kids
    Cross-Bones Style
    Peking Saint

Last but not least, from Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust

    Ziggy Stardust
    Suffragette City
    Rock and Roll Suicide

    1. CS&N: debut album
      Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
      Marrakesh Express
      Guinnevere

this will probably chafe, Bootsy, but

      The Doors: debut album
Break On Through (To the Other Side)
      Soul Kitchen
      The Crystal Ship

      X: Los Angeles
      Johnny Hit and Run Paulene
      Soul Kitchen
      Nausea

      Prince: 1999
      1999
      Little Red Corvette
      Delirious

      and a run of 4
      The Zombies: Odessey and Oracle
      Care of Cell 44
      A Rose for Emily
      Maybe After He's Gone
      Beechwood Park

  12. Here's a good 3 out of 4 sequence from Guided By Voices Mag Earwhig album:

    Sad if I lost it
    I am a Tree
    The Old Grunt
    Bulldog Skin

    1. The first three songs on Bee Thousand are awfully cool

      Hardcore UFOs
      Buzzards and Dreadful Crows
      Tractor Rape Chain

  13. If you need a dose of loud, snotty rock and roll, Nashville's Hans Condor delivers the goods.
    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpT38-AzJkY

  14. 3 song suggestions...

    TMBG
    "Birdhouse in your soul"
    "Lucky ball and chain"
    "Istanbul"

    Springsteen
    "I'm going down"
    "Glory days"
    "Dancing in the dark"

    1. And if you remove the instrumental track after "I'm waiting for the day" then Pet Sound's "I'm waiting..." "Sloop John B" and "God only knows" takes the cake for me.

  15. Going through the library...

You could cut off either end of "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)"/"Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles)"/"Crown Of Love"/"Wake Up" from Funeral and have a solid 3.

You could also pick plenty from The Beatles, but I'll be boring and go with the "Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End" run.

...uh, gotta run apparently, but there's that for now.
