A big ninth carries Rochester. Adam Brett Walker II hits his second. An excellent game for Kohl Stewart. It took twelve innings, but Cedar Rapids took its first loss.
ROCHESTER 11, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 6 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE
Batting stars: Eric Fryer was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in four. Josmil Pinto was 4-for-5 with an RBI. Argenis Diaz was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars: Stephen Pryor struck out three in 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks. Caleb Theilbar pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits. A. J. Achter retired all five men he faced, three by strikeout.
Opposition stars: Ramon Flores was 2-for-5 with two solo homers. Kyle Roller was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Ben Gamel was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
The game: The RailRiders scored three in the third and Flores' homer in the fourth made it a 5-2 lead. It was still 5-1 after five, but Fryer's two-run single capped a four-run sixth that put the Red Wings up 6-5. Flores led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run and it stayed tied 6-6 until the ninth, when the Red Wings tallied five times to take control of the game. Danny Ortiz singled home the go-ahead run, two runs scored on bases-loaded walks, and Fryer again capped the inning with a two-run single.
Of note: Aaron Hicks was 0-for-6 with an RBI. Eddie Rosario was 1-for-5 with two runs. Ortiz was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Alex Meyer started and struck out six in 3.2 innings, but gave up five runs on seven hits and five walks.
CHATTANOOGA 4, BIRMINGHAM 3 IN CHATTANOOGA
Batting stars: Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second), scoring twice and driving in two. Levi Michael was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two. Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching stars: Tyler Duffey struck out eight in seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Zack Jones struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Joey DeMichele was 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Jacob May was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Miles Jaye pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The game: It was scoreless until the fifth, when an RBI single by Walker II and a run-scoring double by Michael made it 2-0. Walker II homered in the seventh to make it 3-0, but in the eighth, a two-run single by Tim Anderson and May's RBI single tied it up 3-3. Not to worry, though, as a two-out RBI single by Mike Gonzales brought home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and Jones pitched around a one-out triple in the ninth.
Of note: Byron Buxton was 1-for-4. Miguel Sano was 0-for-4. Gonzales was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
TAMPA 3, FORT MYERS 1 (11 INNINGS)
Batting star: Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-5 with a double and a run.
Pitching star: Kohl Stewart pitched eight innings, giving up one run on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Mark Payton was 3-for-5 with two runs. Rookie Davis (given name: William Theron Davis) struck out seven in five shutout innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk.
The game: Each team scored once in the fifth and that was it until the eleventh, when Payton singled, went to second on a bunt, and scored on Mike Ford's RBI double. An infield out brought home an insurance run later in the inning. The Miracle did not get a man past first in the eleventh.
Of note: Niko Goodrum was 1-for-5 with a double. Mitch Garver was 0-for-4 with a walk. Max Kepler was 1-for-4. Alex Swim was 0-for-5.
PEORIA 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (12 INNINGS)
Batting star: Zach Granite was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Pitching stars: Mat Batts pitched six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Samuel Clay struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits. Trevor Hildenberger struck out four in three innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars: Collin Radack was 2-for-5 with a run. Luis Perdomo (not the ex-Twin) struck out six in 5.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. Tyler Bray pitched three shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
The game: Oscar Mercado opened the scoring in the first when he singled, stole second and third, and came home on an error. It was 2-0 after five, but Granite singled home a run in the sixth and did it again in the eighth to tie it 2-2. The Kernels had a chance to win in the tenth, but Pat Kelly was thrown out trying to score from second on Granite's single. In the twelfth, Radack opened with a single, stole second, went to third on a bunt, and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice.
Of note: Zack Larson was 1-for-5. Max Murphy was 0-for-4 with an RBI.
