ROCHESTER 5, LEHIGH VALLEY 4 IN ROCHESTER
Batting stars: Eric Farris was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. James Beresford was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Pitching stars: Ryan O'Rourke retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them. Lester Oliveros pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Domonic Brown was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one. Tyler Henson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Severino Gonzalez pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
The game: Farris led off the bottom of the first with a home run, putting the Red Wings up 1-0. It was still 1-0 through five and Jason Wheeler appeared to be cruising. In the sixth, however, two doubles, three singles, and a wild pitch produced four IronPig runs and a 4-1 lead. Farris singled in a run in the seventh to make it 4-2, but the Red Wings left the bases loaded. In the ninth, a walk, a single, and another walk loaded the bases with none out. Farris singled in one and James Beresford delivered a two-run single for the Red Wing victory.
Of note: Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-4. Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk. Wheeler pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
CHATTANOOGA 7, BIRMINGHAM 5 IN BIRMINGHAM (10 INNINGS)
Batting stars: Miguel Sano was 3-for-5 with two home runs (his seventh and eighth) and three RBIs. Jorge Polanco was 3-for-5 with two runs. Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-5 with two runs.
Pitching stars: Dallas Gallant pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout. D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
Opposition stars: Christian Marrero was 3-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring twice. Jacob May was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. Danny Hayes was 2-for-4 with a run.
The game: Sano homered to put the Lookouts up 1-0 in the first, but the Barons got the run back in the second, took the lead in the third when Marcus Lemon tripled and scored, and went up 4-1 in the fourth on two singles, a double, and a ground out. The Lookouts got two in the seventh to get back into the game and tied it in the eighth on a run-scoring double play. Each team scored once in the ninth. In the tenth, Sano hit a two-run homer that put the Lookouts in the lead to stay.
Of note: Byron Buxton was 0-for-5. Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with a run. Max Kepler was 0-for-5. D. J. Baxendale pitched five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
JUPITER 2, FORT MYERS 1 IN JUPITER
Batting stars: Engelb Vielma was 3-for-4 with a run. Zach Granite was 1-for-2 with two walks. Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Pitching star: Brett Lee pitched 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Austin Dean was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, driving in one. Scott Lyman pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks with no strikeouts.
The game: In the fourth, Engelb Vielma walked, stole second, went to third on a balk, and scored on a ground out to put the Miracle up 1-0. Lee had pitched well for seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits. In the eighth, however, Yefri Perez singled, stole second, and scored on a J. T. Riddle single to tie the score. J. T. Chargois came in and gave up an RBI double to Dean to give the Hammerheads a 2-1 lead. In the ninth, Jason Kanzler was thrown out trying to score from first on Christensen's one-out double and a ground out ended the game.
Of note: Alex Swim was 0-for-4. Bryan Haar was 0-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.
QUAD CITIES 10, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Batting star: Blake Schmit was 1-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.
Pitching star: Samuel Clay struck out three in three innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.
Opposition stars: Bryan Muniz was 1-for-2 with a double and three walks, scoring once and driving in two. Mott Hyde was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs. Akeem Bostick pitched four shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
The game: Muniz had a two-run double in a three-run top of the second, but Schmit had a two-run triple in a three-run bottom of the second to tie it 3-3. The River Bandits scored three more in the third, however, getting help from an error, a wild pitch, and a hit batsman, and this time the Kernels could not answer. The River Bandits added a run in the fifth, two in the seventh, and one in the ninth as they cruised to an easy win.
