I didn't see anything queued up for today, so I thought I'd put up my first ever FMD post. Exciting stuff!
I've been using Google Play on a free trial (I use the free version of it to store my songs since you get up to 20 some thousand songs for free and I'll never have that much) for the past two weeks. While I've been pretty impressed with their metal selection. I've been able to find just about whatever I've been looking for (except for Doomsword, which is disappointing). That said, I won't be continuing with a paid subscription when my two months is up. Doing random lists from "genre radio" stations is completely terrible for me. It might work great for others with different tastes, but the "metal" it randomizes is... not good. I pretty much have to know exactly what I want to listen to, then search for it and make my own playlists. I'm quite content buying albums and listening to my own personal collection.
That all said, I have been able to give a listen to some bands that I hadn't before. My favorite that I've discovered so far is Slough Feg. I could see them as having some appeal to some citizens here. They have a dirty, hard-rock sort of groove going while still falling on the heavier side. The vocals are clean, by the way, in case that is a general hang-up for anyone.

I got up early to get out early to get my early bus. I was there, it wasn't. So I had to walk to the next bus.
I wanted the early bus to fill a prescription downtown. I'll wait. "15 Minutes." Never hear my name, I ask after 30, it was already there.
Then eight blocks to the office where I'm in late, less than an hour to prep for a meeting.
I'll write down my list at lunch.
No problem. I came into work early today so there were no bosses around to see me typing a music day post.
No wonder I didn't see you this morning. I imagine you don't have the time today because late, but I see WSK has rice bowls today.
Had lunch at WSK restaurant this week. Veggie tacos still my favorite.
Yeah, no time.

Notes:
1. This isn't from that, but the new Built to Spill album is awesome. They are at Varsity on Sunday and highly recommended for anyone who loves guitar-based rock. I'll be out of town and will miss it.
7-8-9. Wow, the rare pure Robert Pollard related hat trick.
3-4-6-B1 albums should be in everyone's collection just as a matter of course.
Jeez, #2 should also be on your must have album list.
Re: B1.
I was listening to the Pharcyde this week and realized that for my kids to understand "Officer", they need to first listen to "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos", which has more serious subject matter.
Well, "Officer" is close to timely, given recent events between police and youths.
3-4-6-B1 albums should be in everyone's collection just as a matter of course.
What do I win?
Working on my summer list. I've trimmed it from 70 songs to 35 or so, and will have to make the last, painful, ~15 cuts. Deadline for finishing it is "before we go anywhere this weekend."
At least this year I've been saving the cut tracks for possible placement on future lists.
This summer I'm aiming more for relevant messages/lyrics on many songs, instead of just sound alone. It's been a hell of a year, and this mix will reflect that, with a selection or two for my sister's passing, my job loss/new job, the home purchase, etc.
" relevant" "job loss/new job"
You're probably not looking for something to add to your 35, but Björk's "Declare Independence" was a big hit with the family when exam-taking finished.

I like it, but I don't know that Björk will ever make a summer list. Not quite sing-a-longy enough. Even my "relevant lyrics songs" are trying for something easier to listen to.
Meeting is at 10:30, not 10.

2. ITunes imported this as Orbus Terrarum, I had to fix it turning the U's back to V's. Looked wrong. I wonder if iTunes imports the Primal Scream album as Exterminator?
7. Performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Reiner. I've got strong feelings on the performances of this piece; I've heard versions too fast or too slow. I'm strongly against the version used in Disney's "Fantasia", but I don't recall why. This one sounds pretty good, maybe a little fast.
9. Leg is from Black Diamond Heavies. The song is a Dexter Romweber Duo cover.
I love that #7 track. Or at least the entire Pictures at an Exhibition. I can't say I know which part #7 is specifically.
"Night on Bald Mountain" isn't part of Pictures, it's a separate piece, about 10-12 minutes long that's often put on vinyl, cassette, or CD after an orchestration of Pictures (~30 minutes?) because it's Mussorgsky's other famous piece (and the only other one in his top 10 or so that's orchestral). If you've seen Fantasia, it's the devil and witches' mass music.
Well then. I love Pictures, and we'll leave it at that.

Had I gotten around to writing it, this is what I would have put:
I read the Spin Magazine review of the new Colin Stetson/Sarah Neufeld album. In the conclusion:
I can understand Reich (given "Come Out" and "It's Gonna Rain"), but I cannot fathom how Arvo Pärt is "avant-garde".
I cannot fathom how Arvo Pärt is "avant-garde"
Pssh, yeah! I mean, I know, right?

I'm really excited for this Karen Dalton tribute out next week. Sharon Van Etten, Patty Griffin, Julia Holter, and Lucinda Williams lead the parade. (I've heard the Holter number, and like everything she touches, it's sublime.)
AMR alert . . . actually, this is probably more for EAR. I just came across a folk-snark* duo with a fun little Jane Austen song.

*I'm pretty sure this is the first I've encountered the term folk-snark.
