Minor Details: Games of May 22

We hope to get caught up later today.  Kennys Vargas continues to show there's nothing wrong with his batting stroke, hitting two home runs.  Buxton, Kepler, and Walker II lead the Lookouts.  Not enough hitting for the Miracle.  Nick Gordon and Trey Vavra have solid games in a Kernel win.

ROCHESTER 11, NORFOLK 4 IN NORFOLK (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.  Eric Farris was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Pat Dean pitched 6.2 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Nolan Reimold was 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.  Chaz Roe struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  Vargas homered in the first to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead and he hit a three-run homer in the second to make it 7-0.  The Tides never got closer than seven runs.

Of note:  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4.  Ryan Wheeler was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

NORFOLK 3, ROCHESTER 0 IN NORFOLK (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-3.  Eric Fryer was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching star:  Taylor Rogers pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up three runs on nine hits and no walks with no strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Daniel Alvarez was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, his fourth.  Michael Bowden struck out six in 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk.

The game:  Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the first and four singles, two of them infield singles, produced one run in the third.  The Red Wings only once got a man past first base.  That came in the fifth, when they got a pair of two-out singles.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-3.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA 13, MOBILE 2 IN MOBILE (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton was 3-for-6 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in four.  Max Kepler was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Adam Brett Walker II was 3-for-5 with a home run (his eleventh), scoring twice and driving in four.

Pitching stars:  Alex Wimmers pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Madison Boer pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Cole Johnson struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Brandon Drury was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The game:  Buxton had an RBI double and Miguel Sano a run-scoring single in the third inning to give the Lookouts a 2-0 lead.  The Lookouts added three more in the fourth and Buxton had a two-run single in the sixth to make it 7-0.  Walker II hit a three-run homer in the seventh to make it 11-0.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-5.  Sano was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.

MOBILE 7, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN MOBILE (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Stuart Turner was 1-for-3 with a double.  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Nick Burdi struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up four hits.  D. J. Johnson pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Rudy Flores was 2-for-4 with a home run, his sixth.  Socrates Brito was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Aaron Blair struck out six in six innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and one walk.

The game:  The Lookouts scored two in the top of the first but the Bay Bears roared back with six in the bottom of the first.  They had six singles in the inning and then Todd Glaesman hit a two-run triple.  The Lookouts never got back into the game.  They put a man on second in the second and third innings, but never did so after that.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-3 with a run.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with a run.  Miguel Sano was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-3.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3.

BREVARD COUNTY 2, FORT MYERS 1 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Brian Gilbert struck out four in three innings, giving up a run on three hits and two walks.  Luke Westphal struck out three in three innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk.  Todd Van Steensel struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Victor Roache was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Angel Ortega was 2-for-4 with a double.  Javier Salas pitched seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks.

The game:  The Manatees scored in the first on two singles, a double steal, and an infield grounder.  The Miracle tied it in the third when Swim delivered a two-out RBI double but missed a chance to take the lead when he was thrown out trying to score on a Christensen single.  It stayed 1-1 until the sixth, when a walk, a single, and a ground out put the Manatees back on top 2-1.  The Miracle only once advanced a man as far as second base after the third inning.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BELOIT 3 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  T. J. White was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Jared Wilson pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Randy LeBlanc pitched three shutout innings, giving up two walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Max Kuhn was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  James Harris was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Brett Graves pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The game:  The Snappers opened their first inning with four singles, scoring twice.  It stayed 2-0 until the sixth, when Zack Larson's RBI single tied the score at 2-2.  The Kernels broke the tie in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and White's run-scoring double.  Vavra had a two-run single in a three-run ninth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Tanner English was 0-for-5 with a run.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
